McLaren chief's comment says it all as Oscar Piastri beats 'grumpy' Lando Norris
Lando Norris had to settle for third on the Chinese Grand Prix grid while Oscar Piastri secured pole for the first time in his Formula 1 career ahead of George Russell
McLaren chief executive Zak Brown said it was "awesome" to see Oscar Piastri secure his first pole position in Formula 1. In contrast, the American thinks Lando Norris will be "a little bit grumpy" after failing to at least join his team-mate on the front row of the Chinese Grand Prix grid.
Piastri was on top form throughout qualifying and made it pay with a superb final lap that sealed pole position. Norris was on course to make it a McLaren front row lock-out but aborted his final lap after an error and then George Russell snuck in to snatch second place on the grid.

Brown went to the media pen to give Piastri a huge bear hug from behind and congratulate his driver on the achievement. And speaking to Sky Sports after that he said: "It's awesome to have Oscar get his first pole.
"He's been close, a lot of front rows, but that was a mega lap. Only he and George I think improved in the third sector after the wind direction changed, so yeah, an awesome third sector. I think it's great, especially as it's been a tricky weekend for us so far.

"We know we have the pace, we know we have the drivers and the car. The sprint race was great for Oscar, less so for Lando. I'm sure Lando's a little bit grumpy that he's not on the front row with Oscar."
McLaren clearly have the pace advantage over their rivals when everything is working well, but the margins are narrow enough for others to take advantage of any flaws. Russell proved that as he capitalised on Norris bailing out of that final flying lap to snatch second place on the grid from his fellow Brit's grasp.
For Brown, it illustrated how tough the competition is likely to be at the front this year, even if his team does have an advantage for now. He said: "It just says what we've been saying. It's a short year so far, but we've been saying it's going to be a really close season and you can see that if you just miss a sector or lock a wheel, you're P6, you're P1, you're P3.
"So it's certainly nice to be here. It's great for Oscar, I'm really happy for Oscar that he got his first pole. As I've been saying, I think we've got a pretty killer driver line-up and that's what we're seeing so far."
With Max Verstappen having to settle for fourth place and both Ferrari cars not quite as competitive as might have been expected, considering Lewis Hamilton's victory in the Sprint race earlier in the day, Brown pointed out that Mercedes power had paid off in qualifying.

He added: "That was an epic lap by George. I just said to Toto, it's great to have three Mercedes [powered cars] at the front. That was a good lap. Based on what we'd seen, you kind of expected it to be Max or the Ferraris, but cool to have George up there. We like George."
