It's been more than five years since Prince Harry moved to the States with his wife Meghan Markle. But according to sources, he has struggled to make any friends over in California and is "socially marooned" from those around him.
Just recently, the Sussexes were at the centre of a scathing article in Vanity Fair that focused on their life in Montecito. Among the many allegations levelled at the couple was the claim that Meghan acts as a caregiver to her husband, while the Duke takes on the role of 'facilitator' for all of his wife's wishes, the magazine's February cover story claimed.
A so-called source who worked with Harry and Meghan told the publication: "I can picture him meeting Meghan and being just a deep breath of, like, 'I've been so exhausted, and you make everything so easy. I don't want to be like, oh, it's an Oedipus thing or whatever, but it kind of feels like she's reparenting him in a way."
The article also stated that Harry actually has very little interaction with anyone except for Meghan, and is 'socially marooned beyond his nuclear family'. Another insider, who interacted professionally with Meghan, told the magazine the Duchess "was up-front about the fact that Harry hadn't made many friends yet", adding: "I think he probably wants to be left alone."
Harry and Meghan seem to have struggled to make connections in the local area. One claim, attributed to neighbours in Montecito, alleged that the couple had become "local villains" for attracting further attention to the town.
A local told the publication: "They moved away from England to get away from the scrutiny of the press and all they do is try and get in the press in the United States." And another resident described the Sussexes as the "most entitled, disingenuous people on the planet".
Elsewhere in the article, it was reported that Prince Harry did not understand the impact Spare would have on the Royal Family when it was published in 2023. It is believed the bombshell memoir was one of the main reasons why the duke is no longer on talking terms with his brother Prince William.
Talking about whether Harry understood how the memoir could damage relationships between him and royal relatives, a source told Vanity Fair: "I don't know if that’s something he understood while he was doing it."
To date, Harry and Meghan have not publicly addressed the claims made in the magazine. Royal PR expert and former communications secretary to the late Queen, Ailsa Anderson, has said that is likely down to the fact that they don't want to "start adding fuel to the fire".
She told a recent episode of Hello!'s A Right Royal Podcast: "If you start adding fuel to the fire, then you're just elongating a story. So, I think there are times to stand up and be counted, and there are times to say nothing." Ailsa continued: "I think actually they're right. Just let it go and move forward. Otherwise, they'll be creating a story, a further story of their own making."
