Michael Sheen worried 'massive debt was end of everything' – including marriage

Michael Sheen has candidly shared his fears that his relationship with wife Anna Lundberg was on the brink due to financial strain, but her unwavering support saw them through.

The Damned United star opened up about his monetary woes after he found himself steeped in debt and liquidating his assets to fund the Homeless World Cup in Cardiff, when expected sponsorship evaporated.

With Anna, 31, pregnant with their first child at the time, Michael felt the weight of impending financial responsibilities.

Speaking to The Guardian, he confessed: "Anyone would have been in their rights to go, 'Sorry, I didn't sign up for this'. It could have gone either way. But I'm very glad that it went the way it did. I just couldn't have got through that without her."

He also revealed that despite landing high-profile film roles since the 2019 Homeless World Cup event, he continues to chip away at his accrued debts.

The actor, 56, disclosed: "At first, I thought it was the end of everything. I mean, I had nothing left. Not just that, I was in massive debt – I'm still paying it off."

Michael has become quite the philanthropic figure alongside his celebrated acting career, actively working to bring about social change. After declaring himself a "not-for-profit actor" in 2021, he has taken part in various significant charitable initiatives.

His recent efforts include erasing £1m in debts for people, an endeavour showcased in the Channel 4 documentary Michael Sheen's Secret Million Pound Giveaway, where he formed a debt-buying company financed with his personal funds.

However, Michael disclosed his journey as a socially conscious actor started well before this announcement. The BBC recounted his pivotal experience in 2011 during a marathon 72-hour performance of The Passion in Port Talbot, which served as a catalyst for his commitment to philanthropy.

Reflecting on this transformational event, Sheen noted: "I got to know people and organisations within my hometown that I didn't know existed.

"Little groups who were trying to help young carers, who had just enough funding to make a tiny difference to a kid's life by putting on one night a week where they could get out and go bowling or watch a film and just be a kid."

Upon revisiting months later and discovering that the funding for one such group had disappeared, he was struck by the profound impact even a small amount of support could have on a child's life.

A decade after that crucial turning point, the actor known for his roles in Frost/Nixon and The Queen has remained steadfast in his commitment to social justice, continually striving to assist those less privileged than himself.
