Mike Tyson's former coach, Teddy Atlas, has revealed that he 'resented' being associated with the boxing legend.

And he's also condemned the veteran's decision to face Jake Paul back in November, branding that bout 'nonsense'.

Tyson was coached by Atlas during his early years in boxing, with that experience standing him in good stead as he eventually became heavyweight champion of the world.

Their relationship later broke down, however, with Tyson later revealing his old mentor had even put a gun to his head as tensions boiled over.

Atlas, speaking to CanadaCasino.Ca, has now revealed that he 'resented' being associated with the 58-year-old for a while.

Though he knows he has gained good 'exposure' from their time together, it's still something that causes him annoyance.

“I don't like [always being linked to Mike Tyson]. I don't like it," he said.

"I get it. I get the benefits of it, I understand. I trained him for some three and a half to four years, whatever it was, I don't even know.

"I helped form him from when he was 12 years old till he was like 15, right? And maybe a little over.

"I don't even know exactly, but close to 16, he won two national titles in the Junior Olympics. I had him during his formative years. I taught him from the first day all the basics that he needed and that he carried through to later parts of his career.

"I was there for that, and we went through things together, and we went through that journey together. And I appreciate people that do remember that. And it has in many ways given me a certain amount of exposure.

"'He was Tyson's first trainer. He was the one who taught him at the beginning’. You know all that stuff, but I resented it, too.

"I got to be honest. I have been involved with many fighters, maybe 18 world champions in one way or the other.

"I've been involved with three heavyweight champs; Alexander Povetkin, Michael Moorer and Tyson at an early stage.

"But I wasn't there. I didn't make Tyson the heavyweight champ of the world. I didn't do that.”

Tyson's last fight was against Jake Paul back in November.

Yet while fans were excited to see the boxing legend return to the sport, he looked well off the pace as his opponent cruised to victory.

And Atlas has branded that fight 'nonsense', insisting his former student has lost the aggression that he once had.

“Tyson just ain't that guy that wants to hurt someone," he continued.

"He ain't that guy who's willing to go through fire to get to somebody, that ain't him anymore.

"He might still have power, but the power only is relevant if he wants to use it.

"He ain't a guy who's ready to use it. He ain't a guy who's willing to do that. He ain't ready to go and take that risk or have that attitude to use it the way that he wants it.He ain't that guy anymore. It's over, done.

"Once you understand that, forget [having serious conversations about Tyson the boxer]. You’re having a silly conversation.

"I want to say to some of these guys [discussing Tyson boxing], you guys are silly. You guys are silly because you’re talking about stuff that has just no merit. It's nonsense. It's all hypothetical.”
