Trace Cyrus is begging his dad Billy Ray Cyrus to get help after the “Achy Breaky Heart” singer’s troubling performance at Donald Trump’s inaugural Liberty Ball on Jan. 20.
On Wednedsay, Miley Cyrus’ brother took to Instagram to share an emotional plea with his dad.
“Since my earliest memories all I can remember is being obsessed with you and thinking you were the coolest person ever. I wanted to be just like you,” wrote Trace, who was adopted by Billy Ray after his mom Tish married the country star in 1993.
“The day you adopted me was the happiest day of my life,” the post, which was accompanied by a throwback photo of Trace onstage with his dad, continued. “Sadly the man that I wanted so desperately to be just like I barely recognize now.”
Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley Cyrus, Noah Lindsey Cyrus, Braison Cyrus, Trace Cyrus, Brandi Cyrus, and Tish Cyrus in 2009 | Eric Charbonneau/Le Studio/WireimageTrace – a musician who has performed with the group’s Ashland HIGH and Metro Station, and as a solo artist – begged his father to think of his family.
“Me and the girls have been genuinely worried about you for years but you’ve pushed all of us away,” he wrote, apparently referring to his sisters Miley, Noah, and Brandi.
Billy Ray’s youngest child Noah, 25, was having a particularly difficult time dealing with her estrangement from her dad, Trace said.
“Noah desperately has wanted you to be a part of her life and you haven’t even been there for her. That’s your baby girl. She deserves better,” he wrote. “Somehow just like me she still idolizes you though. We are all hanging on to memories of the man we once knew & hoping for the day he returns.”
Trace concluded his message by offering his father an olive branch.
“You’re not healthy Dad & everyone is noticing it … We haven’t talked in a while but I’m over a year and half clean from alcohol. Guess what? I feel amazing.. I don’t know what you’re struggling with exactly but I think I have a pretty good idea & I’d love to help you if you would open up and receive the help,” he said.
Trace’s public message to his father comes after the 63-year-old singer stunned fans with an odd performance at the Liberty Ball.
Cyrus opened with a lackluster solo performance of “Old Town Road,” his 2019 hit with Little Nas X, As he appeared to struggle with technical issues, including the lack of a backing track, he began speaking to the audience and the crew backstage.
“Check? Is anybody awake?” a confused-sounding Cyrus asked. “Is anyone back there? Can somebody turn my guitar back on? … Y’all want me to sing more or you want me to just get the hell off the stage?”
“In life, when you have technical difficulties, you just gotta keep going. Or as President Trump would say, ‘You gotta fight,'” he added. He then segued into an a capella rendition of “Achy Breaky Heart” before finally wandering off stage.
In a statement to People, the country singer again blamed technical difficulties for the on-stage fiasco.
“I wouldn’t have missed the honor of playing this event whether my microphone, guitar and monitors worked or not. I was there because President Donald J. Trump invited me,” he said. “I had a ball at the Liberty Ball last night and I’ve learned through all these years when the producer says, ‘You’re on,’ you go entertain the folks even if the equipment goes to hell. I was there for the people and we had a blast. That’s called rock n roll!!!”
