Miley Cyrus Gives the Cutout Dress Trend an Edgy Makeover in a Leather Roberto Cavalli Gown at SNL 50: The Homecoming Concert
Miley Cyrus gave the cutout dress trend an edgy makeover in a leather Roberto Cavalli gown on the red carpet at SNL 50: The Homecoming Concert.
Miley Cyrus is making leather cutout dresses her signature. Last night the music star stepped out in not one but two edgy takes on the trend from Roberto Cavalli while at the star-studded event “SNL 50: The Homecoming Concert.”
Cyrus walked the red carpet in a cutout gown consisting of winged leather strips spaced out with mesh. The dress, which Cyrus paired with strappy sandal heels from Paris Texas, was shown recently on the label’s spring 2025 runway where designer Fausto Puglisi paid tribute to Cavalli’s archives — but it actually originally hails from Cavalli’s fall 2003 collection when it was sent down the runway with a pair of red thigh-high boots and a wraparound choker.

Cyrus also stepped out in a second leather cutout gown from Roberto Cavalli. For her performance of “Flowers,” she wore a halter gown consisting of diamond-shaped pieces of leather spaced out with see-through panels. The dress, which also featured a feather-trimmed hem, hails from Puglisi’s spring 2024 collection for Roberto Cavalli that was a love letter to strong women.

At the time of the show, Puglisi told WWD of the inspiration behind the collection, “I love California, Mexico, Saint-Tropez, and it was a declaration of freedom for women who don’t need to prove anything. They want to be happy, they want to be free, they can play with their wardrobes.”

Cyrus was styled by Bradley Kenneth for the occasion, who also styled the musician in a custom halter cutout gown made from leather by Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent at the Grammys 2025.
Cutout dresses were one of the biggest style takeaways from this year’s Grammy Awards, where not only Cyrus but also Olivia Rodrigo, Victoria Monét, Latto, Pei-Tzu Lee, and Coco Jones all put forth takes on the trend. Cutout dresses were also a breakout trend at last week’s Critics Choice Awards, where Demi Moore, Kate Hudson, Rachel Brosnahan, Marissa Bode, Stephanie Koenig, Caitriona Balfe, Melanie Zanetti, and Maisy Stella embraced the style. The cutout dress trend was also rampant on the red carpet in 2024, as well as in 2023.
