Millie Bobby Brown Hits Back at Sexist Comments About Her Appearance: ‘I Will Not Be Shamed’
The actor took to Instagram to call out recent “disturbing” comments.
Millie Bobby Brown has posted a scathing video to Instagram, calling out by name several journalists who have written derogatory articles about her appearance. “This isn't journalism. This is bullying,” the actor said. “The fact that adult writers are spending their time dissecting my face, my body, my choices is disturbing. And the fact that some of these articles are written by women makes it even worse.”
In case you missed it, Brown has recently been emulating notable celebrity fashion moments. At the end of February, for the premiere of The Electric State, Brown recreated Gwyneth Paltrow's iconic 1998 red carpet look in a sheer gown. She also paid tribute to Pamela Anderson’s legendary 2005 party girl look in a series of photos on Instagram, styled with a blonde blowout.

Unfortunately, many of the reactions to the actor's appearance have been negative. In fact, there has been a slew of sexist and misogynistic comments directed at the 21-year-old, many of which accuse her of “aging badly”.
Now, the Stranger Things star has hit back in a no-holds-barred Instagram video, in which she calls out—by name—all of the writers, journalists and public figures who have been “bullying” her over her appearance.
In the video, which was posted to Brown's Instagram on Monday, March 3, she talks about how young she was when she started in the industry, and how even though she grew up in front of the world, “people can’t seem to grow with me.”
“Let’s talk about the articles, the headlines, the people who are so desperate to tear young women down,” continues Brown. In a fairly unprecedented move, she goes on to name journalists who have written particularly negative articles about her. “‘Why are Gen Zers like Millie Bobby Brown aging so badly?’ by Lydia Hawken," she begins. “‘What has Millie Bobby Brown done to her face?’ by John Ely. ‘Millie Bobby Brown mistaken for someone’s mom as she guides younger sister Ava through LA’ by Cassie Carpenter.”

Brown also highlights one article which focuses on an insult of her appearance, rather than the grown man who hurled the insult in the first place. “‘Little Britain’s Matt Lucas takes savage swipe at Millie Bobby Brown’s new “mommy makeover” look’—written by Bethan Edwards”.
The “savage swipe” in question was from Matt Lucas, who played various outlandish characters in the Noughties BBC comedy Little Britain. He had compared Brown to one of his characters, Vicky Pollard, who has an exaggerated appearance with messy blonde hair and who always wears a pink tracksuit top.
In response to Brown's Instagram video, Lucas issued an apology to the star, saying: “Nearly 25 years ago I co-wrote and appeared in a sketch show called Little Britain. There was a character in it called Vicky Pollard, who had blonde hair and always wore a pink top, and in the photo you had blonde hair and wore a pink top so I pointed out the similarity by posting one of her catchphrases.”
Lucas said he was left “mortified” after being called out by the star, and concluded his apology by saying: “I would not have posted it if I had thought it would have upset you but I realize it has and for that I apologize.”
Millie Bobby Brown's video now has 1.5 million likes and counting, with many of the comments praising her for calling people out by name and holding them accountable for their words and actions. Sarah Jessica Parker commented: “Enormously proud of you,” while Lewis Hamilton added: “So truly proud of you Millie.” Singer Pixie Lott also weighed in, commenting: “You are a true class act and I hate that you or any young woman in the spotlight has to deal with this.” She added: “So utterly ridiculous this happens, you are always beyond beautiful inside and out and a million things that should be celebrated and never torn down.”
The star ends by defiantly standing up for herself, and rallying for people to “do better.” “I refuse to apologize for growing up. I refuse to make myself smaller to fit the unrealistic expectations of people who can’t handle seeing a girl become a woman. I will not be shamed for how I look, how I dress, or how I present myself.”
She ends by saying: "Let's do better, not just for me, but for every young girl who deserves to grow up without the fear of being torn apart for simply existing.” We couldn't agree more.
