Millie Bobby Brown has called out recent media coverage that scrutinized her appearance and urging people to âdo betterâ.
The Stranger Things star shared a video on her Instagram in which she said there is an expectation in the entertainment industry for women to âstay frozen in time,â a cultural pressure she says is âbigger than just me; something that affects every young woman who grows up under public scrutinyâ.
The British actress shared the video with her 63.3 million Instagram followers after a slew of articles interrogating the 21-year-old actressâ appearance, with headlines including 'What has Millie Bobby Brown done to her face?' and 'Why are Gen Zers like Millie Bobby Brown ageing so badly?'
Comedian Matt Lucas has apologized to Brown, after comparing a photo of the actress dressed in a pink tracksuit to Vicky Pollard, a character he played in the controversial noughties TV series Little Britain.
âDear Millie, I just saw your post and wanted to respond, and provide some contextâ, Lucas said in a public apology to Brown, âNearly 25 years ago I co-wrote and appeared in a sketch show called Little Britain. There was a character in it called Vicky Pollard, who had blonde hair and always wore a pink top, and in the photo you had blonde hair and wore a pink top so I pointed out the similarity by posting one of her catchphrasesâ.
He said that he thought the actress âlooked terrificâ and that he was âmortifiedâ by how his comment was portrayed in media that picked up and wrote about his comments. âI would not have posted it if I had thought it would have upset you but I realise it has and for that I apologiseâ.
In her video, Brown, said that the articles were exacerbating Lucasâ comments on X, âamplifying an insult rather than questioning why a grown man is mocking a young womanâs appearanceâ.
She said: âThis isnât journalism. This is bullying. The fact that adult writers are spending their time dissecting my face, my body, my choices, itâs disturbingâ. Brown pointed out the hypocrisy of the women who had written the articles.
âWe always talk about supporting and uplifting young women but, when the time comes, it seems easier to tear them down for clicksâ.
Brown has grown up in the public eye since the age of nine, when she featured in ABC drama Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and the BBC America show Intruders. In 2016, she first played the role of Eleven in the popular Netflix hit Stranger Things aged 12.
She concluded the video by urging everyone to âdo betterâ â ânot just for me, but for every young girl who deserves to grow up without fear of being torn apart for simply existingâ.
Singer-songwriter and actress Pixie Lott said that Brown is âbeautiful inside and outâ and âshould be celebrated and never torn down.â
Brown is not afraid to call out the media, after firmly correcting a photographer earlier this month who mistakenly referred to her husband as her "boyfriend."
