Mindy Kaling Says This Is “One of My Favorite Things” About Friend Meghan Markle on ‘With Love, Meghan’

In the second episode of Meghan Markle’s eight-part Netflix lifestyle series With Love, Meghan, we get a glimpse into the friendship of Meghan and Mindy Kaling—and learn what one of Kaling’s “favorite things” about the Duchess of Sussex is.

When Kaling asks Meghan about her “lewk,” the actress adds that Meghan’s style is “one of my favorite things.”

To this, the As Ever founder shares that, when it comes to fashion, she likes “high-low,” and shares that she’s wearing a shirt from Italian luxury brand Loro Piana, a sweater from California designer Jenni Kayne, and pants from Zara. To this, Kaling responds, “Really cute.”

The two women bond over being actresses during their time together (Kaling is still in the business, while Meghan retired from acting in the leadup to her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry), and Kaling learned Meghan’s preferred surname—and it’s not Markle.

In the episode, Kaling refers to Meghan as “Meghan Markle,” to which Meghan points out, “It’s so funny that you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m Sussex now.”

“You have kids and you go, ‘No, I share my name with my children,’” Meghan said. “And that feels so…I didn’t know how meaningful it would be, but it just means so much to go, ‘This is our family name, our little family name.”

In response, Kaling replies, “Now I know, and I love it.”

In a recent interview with TIME, Kaling opened up about her friendship with Meghan, telling the outlet, “I think a misconception about Meghan is that she’s in any way fussy or has expectations of fanciness. She really is a down-to-earth person who knows a lot of fun tricks to make entertaining and cooking easier.”

Kaling—who not only was a guest on Meghan’s 2022 Spotify podcast, Archetypes, but also received a coveted jar of Meghan’s strawberry jam from her lifestyle brand As Ever (formerly called American Riviera Orchard)—also called Meghan “a very generous woman” and praised her hosting skills. Her episode of With Love Meghan was focused on “throwing a party for children,” Kaling said. “I love cooking, but I’m really not good at entertaining. I don’t know anything about how you’re not supposed to use overhead lighting when people come over. You’re supposed to use little lamps. But Meghan just knows how to do that stuff.”

“For kids’ parties I usually just go to the party supply store and get paper things, which I don’t judge, and neither does she,” Kaling added. “But it was fun to learn simple ways to do a homemade kids’ party.”
