Mindy Kaling goes for a layup with comedy series ‘Running Point’

Real life Los Angeles Lakers exec Jeanie Buss, an admired, larger than life figure, inspired Thursday’s “Running Point,” Netflix’s 10-episode sports comedy series.
Kate Hudson stars as fictional Isla Gordon who, thanks to a family scandal, is suddenly appointed president of the Los Angeles Waves, a storied pro basketball franchise and her family business.
Cambridge native Mindy Kaling, 45, a Tony-winning, Emmy-nominated actor-writer-producer, co-created and co-wrote the show.
It all began, Kaling said in a virtual press conference, “When the great Jeanie Buss” – the storied franchise’s controlling owner and president – “approached me about doing a show based on her life. Many people have fictionalized her life and her family but she’d never been the voice behind it.
“She loved ‘The Office,’ the show that I worked on for many years. So I was so excited about that idea. She’s such a remarkable person.”Buss, despite her schedule, made sure she was involved. “She’s incredibly busy and gave us so much access. We went to the facilities, interviewed her about her professional life, her personal life.
“One of the reasons to do ‘Running Point’ is because, obviously, this is not based on Jeanie’s life per se. It’s inspired by her most interesting, dramatic and cinematic life, both romantically, professionally. And she gave us all access to that!
“She was super open. On every level, she was the dream collaborator.
“Jeanie is,” Kaling added, “if you’ve ever met her, seen her photo or an interview, incredibly glamorous. While also being very focused and professional. When you think of who could play this, who could pull it off, Kate is just that person.”
Not so coincidentally, Buss and Hudson have been good friends for decades.
“Running Point” is but the latest in Kaling’s collection of formidable females. “I’m always drawn to ambitious women who are underdogs. What’s really fun about Mindy Lahiri” – her “The Mindy Project” character – “or Isla, is that they’re at once both glamorous but also impatient, flawed.
“They have a lot to learn. I think that that’s really fun in one character. What’s great about a modern female character now is that you can see them want big things and say things that are a little bit outrageous.
“And if you can get someone like Kate Hudson to play the character, you still like them! That’s such a fine like that we love toying with: How far can we push this character in what she’s saying — and you still are rooting for her?
“Kate, because she’s so gifted, so likable and she has this glow, it’s like she can get away with murder.”
“Running Point” streams on Netflix Feb. 27
