Most dangerous place to live in Wales revealed
Figures have been published which show which parts of Wales are the worst and best to live in terms of crime
A new crime map has been published which reveals the most dangerous place to live in Wales. Across England and Wales, all 43 police forces recorded more than five million crimes (not including fraud) in the 12 months up to September 2024.
Among those crimes, 261,000 were recorded across the four forces in Wales - South Wales Police, Gwent Police, Dyfed-Powys Police and North Wales Police. Each police force area is split into smaller community safety partnership areas, which broadly match local authority areas. New crime rates - the number of crimes in each area for every 1,000 people living there - have now been released which allow for a fairer comparison between locations with widely different population sizes.
The figures show that Newport has the highest crime rate in the whole of Wales, with 121 offences for every 1,000 people. That’s the equivalent of one crime report for every eight people. Blaenau Gwent has the second highest crime rate with 118 crimes per 1,000 people, and then Cardiff with 106. Isle of Anglesey is the safest area to live in Wales with a rate of 55 crimes per 1,000 population, or one crime for every 18 people. Westminster in London has by far the highest crime rate in the country with 434 offences for every 1,000 people. That’s the equivalent of one crime report for every two people. It is also more than double the crime rate in Camden, the area with the next highest crime rate of 189 crimes per 1,000 population.
Outside London, Middlesbrough in the North East has the highest crime rate, with 166 offences for every 1,000 people or the equivalent of one crime for every six people living there, followed by Manchester (158 crimes per 1,000 population), Blackpool (155), and Hartlepool (141).
