NI woman shocked after cancer discovered during trip to Turkey for weight loss surgery
A woman from Co Armagh diagnosed with cancer while in Turkey for surgery to aid weight loss has described the devastating impact of the news.

Co Armagh womanâs relief at disease being caught in time by doctors preparing for gastric sleeve procedure, but she still faces tough time ahead with possible need for major surgery
Alex Herron (25) travelled in January with her partner John to undergo a gastric sleeve procedure.
However, she was left shocked after being told there was a problem.
The Poyntzpass woman explained: âI had saved up for it and we went over to Turkey together just after Christmas.
âEverything was going to plan initially. I got some tests and they were all good, and then when it came to the ultrasound the doctor could see there was a mass on my pancreas.â
The law student tried to remain calm while her doctor told her through a translator they were going to get a second opinion.
âSomeone else came in and they basically decided they were going to send me to get an MRI,â she added.
âThey still werenât sure if I was going to get the procedure or not, but the next morning when everyone around me was going to get the surgery and I wasnât being called, I sort of knew it was something serious.â
Her doctor then informed Alex that she had a 4cm tumour on her pancreas.
She said: âWe were told we could stay there and have it treated or go home. But if we stayed there it was going to take up to four months in case I needed chemo.
âIt was a really difficult decision and we only had 20 minutes to make it, but we decided to go home because we couldnât take four months off work.â
Despite their anxiety, the couple decided to try to enjoy their break in Turkey.
âIt was our anniversary, so we just tried to make the most out of it,â she said.
âWe had the flights booked and couldnât afford different flights, and we didnât want to just sit crying in the hotel room.â
When she returned home medics confirmed what the Turkish doctors had found.
âIâve been told by multiple doctors that if they hadnât discovered it while I was in Turkey it never would have been caught so early,â she revealed.
She may need to undergo what is called a Whipple procedure, which involves the removal of the head of the pancreas, gallbladder, bowel duct and duodenum.
âThere is a two-five per cent chance that I wonât wake up â that is very, very scary,â she added.
âIt is a major surgery, and even if it does work, Iâll have at least two weeks of a recovery period.â
A biopsy is needed to confirm whether she needs the operation. She is due to have a consultation in London ahead of a biopsy. The biopsy is not available here.
Her family have set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for the consultation and surgery.
âI need a biopsy first to see what treatment I should get ⌠I understand it just comes down to funding, but it just feels so unfair that I canât get the care I need because of where I live,â Alex said.
