Netflix Toxic Town's Jodie Whittaker says she was 'terrified' to do Scots accent
Jodie Whittaker appeared on This Morning to speak about her role in the new Netflix series 'Toxic Town', where she takes on a mix of a Glaswegian and Corby accent, which has sparked backlash from many Scottish viewers.
Jodie Whittaker has confessed she was 'terrified' to attempt a Glaswegian accent in her Netflix series Toxic Town amid the backlash from Scottish viewers, who are not impressed with the casting.
During Thursday's instalment of This Morning, the 42-year-old, who plays the leading part of Susan McIntyre in the show, appeared on the ITV programme to speak to hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley about her role in the series, which is based on real events.

Jodie was joined by two of the real life Toxic Town mothers, Tracey and Maggie, who inspired the Netflix drama.
Toxic town is a powerful four-part series which tells the moving tale of how a group of mothers in a northern England town demanded answers and justice after they noticed their children were being born with defects and health conditions.
β
Doctor Who star Jodie portrays leader of the group Susan, who is a single mum that becomes very concerned when her son Connor is born without fingers on one hand - a birth defect that would later go on to be known as 'Corby hand'.
Susan was born in Scotland but moved to Corby at three-years-old, hence why Jodie had to take on a mix of a Scottish/Corby accent in the show.
β
Speaking on This Morning, Jodie, who hails from West Yorkshire, joked that she was scared to take on the hybrid Glaswegian accent for one particular scene when Ben asked if she contemplated taking the role or not.
She said: "From my point of view I'm instantly terrified because I think the opening scene is karaoke in a Glaswegian/Corby accent so there's things like that where you're going 'right okay", which evoked a full round of laughter from the studio.
Her comment comes after Jodie has been slammed online by Scottish viewers for her 'poor attempt' at portraying an accurate Scots accent in the show.

Taking to X, one person wrote: "Saw a trailer for Toxic Town with Jodie Whittaker playing a Scottish character. I say this as someone who really likes her, I am f****** tired of Scottish characters being played by actors who arenβt Scottish. If it was now and again fair enough, but itβs all the f****** time."
Another chimed in: "There are so many talented Scottish actors out there, why not use them for the Scottish roles. Jodie Whittaker (although a fantastic actress) her poor attempt at an accent is hard to listen to. From an actual Scottish person."

A third agreed: "There are so many talented Scottish actors out there, why not use them for the Scottish roles. Jodie Whittaker (although a fantastic actress) her poor attempt at an accent is hard to listen to. From an actual Scottish person."
However, according to reports, Jodie insists she got the real life Susan McIntyre's approval for her hybrid Scottish/ Corby accent on the show.
Jonnie Robinson, lead curator of spoken English at the British Library, previously revealed that Corby has developed an accent unlike anywhere else in England that has been hugely influenced by Scotland.

The reason for their unique dialect dates back to the 1950s when a steel works opened in the town and a large number of Scots moved to Corby for work.
