Netflix & Amazon Prime Video Line-Up Documentaries On Murder Of Rachel Nickell

Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have lined up documentaries on Rachel Nickell, who was brutally stabbed to death on Wimbledon Common in July 1992.

EXCLUSIVE: The shocking murder of model Rachel Nickell, and the bungled police investigations that followed, continue to be an endless source of fascination for TV producers.

Deadline understands that both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have lined up documentaries on Nickell, the British woman who was stabbed to death on Wimbledon Common, south-west London, in July 1992.

Netflix has greenlit an original documentary from Blast! Films, the Sky Studios-owned production company behind Nat Geo’s Tsunami: Race Against Time. Netflix declined to comment.

Production has been underway for many months on the three-part series, which has the working title Wimbledon Common. Netflix is expected to mix documentary storytelling with dramatized elements as it examines Nickell’s murder and police failures in catching her killer Robert Napper.

Meanwhile, Amazon Prime Video has acquired the UK rights to The Wimbledon Killer, a two-part series that features interviews with detectives about what went wrong with the investigation, not least wrongly accusing Colin Stagg of murder.

The Wimbledon Killer is produced by Blink Films, the UK outfit behind Discovery’s Mother, May I Murder?. The Nickell doc is distributed internationally by Sphere Abacus.

Nickell’s murder is also the subject of an upcoming Netflix drama series, titled The Witness. André and Alex Hanscombe, the partner and son of Nickell (Alex was with his mother when she was killed in broad daylight), have consulted on the series, which is produced by STV Studios.

The tragedy was also spotlighted four years ago in Channel 4 drama Deceit, starring Niamh Algar. Various other documentaries have been made about the murder, including ITV’s Rachel Nickell: The Untold Story.
