Netflix's Exciting New Dungeons & Dragons Show Can Be Its Perfect Stranger Things Replacement
The two shows have a lot in common.
Stranger Things is set to come to an end, which means Netflix needs to look ahead to the next big franchise, and it has the perfect thing lined up with the new Dungeons & Dragons show. Stranger Things debuted on Netflix back in 2016, and it quickly helped to put the streamer on the map. Though Netflix had been operating for years, and had already made the transition into a streaming platform that produces original content, Stranger Things went viral in a way that nothing else on the platform had up to that point.
However, after ten years and five seasons, Stranger Things is coming to an end, with all the stars moving on to new projects. Which means it's time for Netflix to look at what can fill the gap, and it's already got the perfect show lined up. With connections between both shows, and anticipation building for the new D&D live-action series, it is perfectly positioned to keep fans of Stranger Things on the platform and excited for more exciting stories.
A Live-Action D&D Show Makes Sense For Netflix After Stranger ThingsNetflix Needs A New Hit Fantasy Show To Keep Up Momentum
Stranger Things was unique as a nostalgic thriller adventure series that saw a group of kids encounter weird and supernatural evil forces. However, the show drew a lot of inspiration from D&D, with the main characters being huge fans of the role-playing game in-universe. As a result, they referred to themselves as the Party, they named their villains after characters from the game, and they applied the same logic and problem-solving concepts to their real-life adventures in order to progress, take down the villains, and come out on top.

And the connections appear to be clear to the executives at Netflix too, considering Shawn Levy is currently one of the few names attached to their new D&D project, after serving as an executive producer on Stranger Things from the start, and directing a handful of episodes himself. Levy will likely take that experience, his passion for this style of storytelling, and create something that has some sort of similarity, even if the overall narrative setting is wildly different.
Netflix's Dungeons & Dragons Show Must Learn From Stranger ThingsDungeons & Dragons Can Shine Where Stranger Things Faltered
And while the two shows will certainly have some differences, there is a lot that the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons series can learn from Stranger Things. When Stranger Things first began, it absolutely nailed getting the characters right, with emotive, expressive, and engaging characters who grew beyond the roles that were imagined for them. This can be seen in the evolution of characters like Steve, played by Joe Keery, and Eddie Munson, played by Joseph Quinn. These characters evolved and connected with the audience on a deeper level. Then, the show began to expand, with a growing epic plot that sometimes gets in the way of the characters.
For D&D to succeed, it needs to approach the story from the perspective of its characters first and foremost. Lord of the Rings is an epic fantasy, but the movies couldn't have succeeded if they didn't hone in on characters like Frodo, Gandalf, and the others. D&D needs to get the characters right, and then ensure the huge sprawling plot doesn't get too out of hand to the point that the characters get lost in the weeds. If it can do that, there is no reason the new Dungeons & Dragons TV show can't be as successful as Stranger Things.
