Netflix viewers brand Adolescence 'most important show of the year'

The four-part drama features one of the UK's most popular actors of recent years

Netflix viewers have branded UK actor Stephen Graham's brand-new show Adolescence the 'most important show of the year' hours after its release.

It's been a busy period for Stephen, who is best known for his work in The Irishman, Boiling Point and Guy Richie's Snatch, having recentely won plaudits for his performance in A Thousand Blows on Disney+.

Seemingly the busiest man in the movie and television industry, all four episodes of Stephen's new mini-series Adolescence released on Netflix on Thursday (March 13)

The hard-hitting drama follows 13-year-old boy Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) and his parents, played by Stephen and Christine Tremarco, as he is arrested in connection with the killing of his classmate.

Described as a 'parent's worst-nightmare', Jamie is taken into police custody to be questioned on his involvement in the fatal stabbing of a teenage girl in his school.

Setting itself apart from your normal UK crime drama, each of Adolescence's four episodes have been filmed in one take to make those watching at home feel even closer to the drama.

Made in an effort to confront the rise in teenage boys being influenced by influencers who promote toxic mascunlity as well as knife crime in the UK, Adolescence debuted was a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Viewers seem to be in agreement with critics, with those who have already binged the series taking to X, previously known as Twitter, to give their reviews.

Speaking to The Mirror about how the show came to be, Stephen, who co-wrote the series, revealed the creative team were 'asked to create a one-shot piece which was going to be a series'.

"So we were coming up with the possibilities of what we’d make it about. And I’d read an article in the paper about a young boy stabbing a young girl, and it made me feel a bit cold.

“Then, about three or four months later there was a piece on the news. And it was a young boy, again, who had stabbed a young girl - and they are young boys. They’re not men. And it was the complete opposite end of the country," he said.
