The New York Giantswere one of the favourites to land Matthew Stafford, but with the quarterback opting to stay in Los Angeles, they'll have to look elsewhere for a new starting signal caller.
It comes after Stafford agreed to restructure his contract with the Rams, keeping the Super Bowl-winning QB in LA for at least one more year.
Names like Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson and Sam Darnold are all valid alternatives for the Giants, who are looking to rebuild after slumping to a 3-14 record last season.
As per Connor Hughes of SNY, the favourite to join the Giants is Wilson. He's a free agent and isn't expected to re-sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers after playing for them last season, but having a dismal end to the campaign.
Hughes added that Rodgers has been discussed by the Giants, but it hasn't gone any further than that despite the New York Jets announcing they will release him.
"The #Giants took their big swing on Matt Stafford. That failed. Now multiple sources expect them to concentrate their efforts on getting the No. 1 pick from Tennessee, and pairing the QB they select with a veteran," Hughes wrote.
"That could be Aaron Rodgers, but I'm told the former Packers/Jets QB is more of a "discussion" at this point than immediate Stafford fallback. Russell Wilson, Sam Darnold are two others the Giants are discussing, per sources. A couple people I talked to believed Wilson to be the most likely outcome.
"As for the rookies: I couldn't find anyone affiliated with a team who had Shedeur Sanders ranked ahead of Cam Ward. A couple had others as the No. 2 QB in this class. All felt any trade to No. 1 is for one player: Ward.
"That doesn't mean the Giants won't take Sanders. They'd just be on an island with their evaluation. That also doesn't really matter as long as they end up right."
Wilson isn't the same quarterback who starred for the Seattle Seahawks, but he showed last season that he still has some gas in the tank.
After a strong start to his career in Pittsburgh, he slumped in the later stages of the season. Although he is 36, he could be a decent bridge quarterback for the Giants if they aren't able to land anybody who can take over the position long term this offseason.
