Nicola McLean details cancer scare - 'I thought I was going to die'
Nicola McLean has revealed she suffered a secret cancer scare back in November, with the former glamour model fearing for her life after finding a lump on her breast.
Former glamour model Nicola McLean has been left shaken after a secret cancer scare, which had her fearing she was going to die. The 43-year-old discovered a lump in her breast in November and admits she automatically thought the worst.
Sitting down for an exclusive interview, Nicola candidly says, “I found a lump on my breast while I was moisturising and immediately I broke down in tears and thought, ‘What if it’s cancer?’ “Straight away I thought, ‘I’m going to die,’” continues Nicola, who has suffered with severe anxiety for several years. “Something like this makes my mind go into overdrive. As someone who has anxiety anyway, this was just awful.”

The mum of two, who appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2012 and again in 2017, has been married to former footballer Tom Williams since 2009. The couple have two children, Rocky, 18, and Striker, 14. And while she informed her husband straight away after finding the lump, Nicola says she couldn’t face telling their sons.
“Tom was amazing – he’s so supportive and we talk about everything. He’s the calm one and was telling me, ‘We don’t know what it is yet,’ and being really rational. I didn’t tell the kids. I would never tell the kids something like this – I wouldn’t want to worry them. They know I have anxiety, and I’ll tell them when I’m feeling anxious because I think it’s good to talk about it, but I’d never worry them with something like this.”
Thankfully, doctors confirmed that the lump was benign and not cancerous, something Nicola was more than relieved to hear. “I went to the GP, who referred me to the cancer unit. They were great – really quick with everything,” she says. “It was a massive relief. But being referred to a cancer unit is scary in itself. The doctor said if the lump had been larger than 4cm it would have had to be removed, but it wasn’t, thankfully.”
Nicola has been open about the cosmetic procedures she has had, including three boob jobs taking her to a 32GG. Admitting this made it more difficult for her to keep on top of checking her breasts, Nicola says, “My implants are so big that it’s hard to know what is mine and what isn’t, which made me not check as much.”

However, the ordeal has given Nicola the shake-up she needed to take her health more seriously. No stranger to cancer, the star watched her mum battle the disease, something which, she confesses, has made her shy away from health issues.
“My mum had breast cancer and it was a really gruelling time,” she tells us. “She had chemotherapy and then radiotherapy and lost all her hair – it was awful. Thankfully, she is fine now and got through it. She’s so inspiring. But that made me worry more because it is hereditary, so of course my mind went straight to cancer when I found the lump.
“You’d think because my mum had it, I’d be more conscious about checking my boobs and keeping an eye on my health. But I went the opposite way. I bury my head in the sand when things like this happen and try to put things off for as long as possible. I just think, ‘I’m going to be okay and live forever,’ but this has been a real wake-up call for me.”
The scare means she is now dedicated to putting her health first, and won’t be sweeping it under the carpet any longer. “I never prioritise self-care, I’m always at the bottom of the pile,” Nicola says. “I find it difficult to focus on myself, but this has made me realise how important my health is. Being here is more important than anything. I’m making a vow to be more on top of things, even when it comes to my smear tests and general check-ups, I don’t want to avoid my health any more.”
After the scary ordeal, she is committed to putting her health first
With World Cancer Awareness Day on 4 February, Nicola is keen to spread the word and help others who may be scared to check their breasts.
“It’s something that we need to be doing,” she says, “It’s so easy to do in the shower. Everyone is different and onlywe know what’s normal and what isn’t. It’s just being aware and not avoiding it.
“I was scared of the ‘what if’, but I want others not to let fear get in the way of their health. This has really opened my eyes.” Following the traumatising experience, Nicola says she’s feeling grateful for her health and looking forward to the year ahead. “I feel a good energy this year. I’m feeling really positive and happy at the moment. I think it’s going to be a good year and I’m ready to face everything head on now.”
