Oh, what a knight! Why the medieval era is high societyâs favourite party theme right now, with jousts, tankards of mead and pop hits on the lute
Mad for the Middle Ages? In â??Tatlerâ??s January issue, Features Editor Annabel Sampson revealed all about the party theme which has become the talk of the town
The outfits were mind-boggling â unsurprising, given the pointers that Jackson issued to the guests. âWe sent a lookbook with some very medieval text to describe different characters,â she says. Anya Hindmarch, Goodâs godmother, came as a crow, with a black swan-shaped headpiece (âa definite talking pointâ); Richard E Grant was dressed as a nobleman in a gold-embossed jacket; artist Josephine Dessine was a damsel in distress â albeit one brandishing a manâs severed head on a silver platter. But it wasnât all about the costumes: âFor the table placement, we had gnarly old vegetables and potatoes with names written on,â laughs Jackson â whose own outfit took six months to create. And there was barrel upon barrel of mead.

Such details will ring true to glamorous history teacher Tom Willis, who brought his subject to life by hosting his Valhalla-themed 30th birthday party around a weed-strewn lake overlookinga Coates & Seely vineyard at his house in Hampshire. âI wanted a Pagan-ish ritual â something which was strange enough and uncomfortable enough,â he says. Willisâs costume included a feathered shoulder shrug that he sourced from the esteemed costumerie Get Dressed for Battle, and a medieval-style brass carynx (a Celtic war horn) that was taller than him. The party climaxed in âThe Culmination of Euphoriaâ, during which Willis waded through the lake to a small island â âI was planning to get the longboat, but got caught up in the momentâ â gave a battle roar, then set a funeral-pyre-like bonfire alight. Some historical licence was taken, though: Celia Woodhouse, née McCorquodale, eschewed the mandated âauthentic drinking vesselâ for a none-too-medieval pink âOne Thirsty B****â tankard.
Itâs not the first time medievalism has captured societyâs imagination. The Pre-Raphaelites (and their high-society 1960s acolytes â think Ormsby-Gores, Lambtons, Eliots and Jaggers) loved nothing more than The Quest for the Holy Grail and Lord Tennysonâs Idylls of the King. More recently, Game of Thrones set even Michael Gove and George Osborneâs hearts racing. But itâs not just the eraâs chivalric romance and dastardly machinations that are the lure. Because from Sir Lancelot and Guinevere to the sword of Excalibur, there is no myth, no legend, no Middle Ages saga that cannot translate into the society costume drama to usurp all others. Itâs the escapist, multigenerational theme of the moment that is spreading faster than the Black Death.
