The 2025 Oscars are finally here and ready to crown some winners after a twisty awards season.

Unlike last year when “Oppenheimer” dominated every major precursor, the 2025 circuit has seen a revolving door of frontrunners. Netflix’s “Emilia PĂ©rez,” a musical about a drug lord who undergoes gender-affirming surgery, led the way with 13 Oscar nominations, followed by A24’s architectural epic “The Brutalist” and Universal’s Broadway adaptation “Wicked” with 10 each. However, “Emilia PĂ©rez’s” Oscar chances took a hit after a social media controversy erupted around past offensive tweets by lead actress nominee Karla SofĂa GascĂłn.

Now, the best picture race seems more uncertain. “Conclave,” the Focus Features drama about a papal election, won top prizes at the SAG and BAFTA ceremonies last week, while “The Brutalist” won the Golden Globe for best drama. Meanwhile, “Anora,” Neon comedy-drama’s about a sex worker ensnared by a Russian oligarch’s enforcers, received top prizes from the PGAs, DGAs and WGAs. The other best picture contenders are “A Complete Unknown,” “Dune: Part Two,” “I’m Still Here,” “Nickel Boys” and “The Substance.”

The best actor category appears to be a race between Adrien Brody, who played an immigrant architect in “The Brutalist,” and TimothĂ©e Chalamet, who starred as Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown.” They’re also up against Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”), Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”) and Sebastian Stan (“The Apprentice”).

Popular on Variety

In best actress, Demi Moore seems to be the favorite for playing an aging actress who takes a suspicious youth serum in “The Substance,” but “Anora” star Mikey Madison is also in the mix. Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”), Karla SofĂa GascĂłn (“Emilia PĂ©rez”) and Fernanda Torres (“I’m Still Here”) are also in the running.
