It’s that time of year again!

It’s Oscars season, and the question on everyone’s lips is, who will win the award for Best Picture? Will it be Conclave, Emilia Pérez, The Substance or one of the other seven nominees?

The 97th Annual Awards is upon us, and there’s been some big changes this year. Here’s everything you need to know about this year's event.

How to watch this year’s Academy Awards

The whole ceremony will be broadcast live on Sunday March 2, from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

For UK viewers the ceremony and red carpet will be hosted by Jonathan Ross, and it will be starting at 10:30pm and finishing at 3:35am on ITV1 and ITVX. Although, if you don’t fancy staying up until the early hours, you can catch up the following day where it will be available on ITVX.

Big changes to this year’s event and why?

For the first time in nearly 80 years, the Academy Awards has broken tradition and made a major change to the performances taking place on stage at the event.

This means that for the first time there are no Best Original Song performances this year, and that those in the running for the Best Original Song Oscar will not perform as they usually would.

Elton John and Selena Gomez, as well as several others are nominated for the award, and now will unfortunately not be able to perform.

In a letter to Academy members on Wednesday January 22, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said:“This year the Best Original Song category presentation will move away from live performances and will be focused on the songwriters.

“We will celebrate their artistry through personal reflections from the teams who bring these songs to life.

“All of this, and more, will uncover the stories and inspiration behind this year’s nominees.”

Other changes made to this year’s ceremony, including nominations announcements, were a result of the wildfires which happened in Los Angeles earlier this year.

In a statement made in January, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said:

“We are all devastated by the impact of the fires and the profound losses experienced by so many in our community. The Academy has always been a unifying force within the film industry, and we are committed to standing together in the face of hardship.

“Due to the still-active fires in the Los Angeles area, we feel it is necessary to extend our voting period and move the date of our nominations announcement to allow additional time for our members.

“Additionally, as we want to be sensitive to the infrastructure and lodging needs of the region in these next few weeks, it is imperative that we make some changes to our schedule of events, which we believe will have the support of our industry.

“Our members always share how important it is for us to come together as a community, and we are determined to use this opportunity to celebrate our resilient and compassionate industry. We also look forward to honoring our frontline workers who have aided with the fires, recognizing those impacted, and encouraging people to join the Academy in supporting the relief efforts.

“We will get through this together and bring a sense of healing to our global film community.”

Who’s presenting?

Comedian Conan O’Brien will be hosting for the first time, replacing Jimmy Kimmel who has presented the previous two years.

Speaking to ABC News, O’Brien expressed that he was hoping to balance humour and respect – as well as honouring those affected by the LA fires earlier in the year.

He said: "The Oscars is a show that is very much a hometown show. It's a Los Angeles show, so what's happened here needs to be addressed.

"There's a needle to thread, there's a line to walk, and I'm determined to do that correctly. But I want to make sure there's humour, that we have some fun, and that we have some joy.

"It's a celebration of hard work that's been done by many people."

Despite hosting the show, Conan won’t be the only one presenting that evening. There is a big star-studded line up of celebrities ready to present awards to those who have been successful.
