Adrien Brody faced backlash for his "rude" acceptance speech at the Oscars last night. As he accepted the Best Actor in a Leading Role award, Adrien used his platform to advocate for a "healthier, happier and more inclusive world" reflecting on his personal journey.

Despite being cut off by music, his speech at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles was met with applause. However, viewers were less than impressed when he threw his chewing gum at his partner Georgina before taking the stage.

‌

As he prepared to deliver his acceptance speech, he realised he still had his gum and tossed it towards Georgina before returning to the stage, reports the Mirror.

He began his speech by expressing gratitude: "Thank you God. Thank you for this blessed life. If I may just humbly begin by giving thanks for the tremendous outpouring of love that I've felt from this world and every individual that has treated me with respect and appreciation. I feel so fortunate,".

‌

He went on to discuss the precarious nature of acting, saying: "Acting is a very fragile profession. It looks very glamorous and in certain moments it is but the one thing I've gained in having the privilege to come back here is to have some perspective."

He concluded by acknowledging the fleeting nature of success, adding: "No matter where you are in your career and what you've accomplished, it can all go away and I think what makes this night most special is the awareness of that and the gratitude I have to still do the work that I love."

Upon receiving the accolade, Adrien expressed his sentiments: "Winning an award like this, it signifies a destination and something my character references in the film, but to me it also, beyond the pinnacle of a career it is a chance to begin again and the opportunity to hopefully be fortunate enough that the next 20 years of my life I am worthy of such meaningful and important, relevant roles."

‌

He proceeded to show gratitude towards his family, friends, and fellow nominees. Yet, his speech nearly came to an abrupt end as the orchestra started playing to usher him off stage.

In response to the prompt from the show's producers, he gestured for patience, saying: "I will wrap this up, please turn the music off, it's not my first rodeo. I have to thank my mom and dad, who are here as well. They've just created such a strong foundation of respect and kindness and a wonderful spirit and they've given me the strength to pursue this dream."

‌

Adrien continued, highlighting his role as a representative of deeper societal issues: "I'm here once again to represent the lingering traumas and the repercussions of war and systematic oppression and anti-Semitism and racism and othering. I believe, I pray for a healthier and happier and more inclusive world. I believe if the past can teach us anything, it's a reminder to not let hate go unchecked."

As the music swelled again in an attempt to conclude his time on stage, he concluded: "OK, I'll get out of here, I love you, I appreciate you all, let's fight for what's right. Keep smiling, keep loving one another and let's rebuild together."

However, viewers at home were left disgruntled by some of the comments he made during his speech.

‌

Adrien Brody's Oscars appearance sparked a range of reactions on social media, with one user criticising: "Adrien Brody is so rude and entitled to think he deserves more time on stage than others #Oscars," while another took a different tone: "Adrien Brody said 'I'll be brief' but then gave us a whole director's cut of a speech. Legend energy."

A third viewer expressed their exasperation: "please god never make me sit through an Adrien Brody award speech again! #Oscars."

‌

The actor's memorable moment at the 2003 Academy Awards resurfaced when Halle Berry, who presented him with the Best Actor award for his role in The Pianist, encountered him on the red carpet. Back then, Brody had surprised her with a kiss onstage, quipping: "I bet they didn't tell you that was in the gift bag," which became a widely discussed event.

At this year's Oscars, Berry spotted Brody during an interview on the red carpet and decided to reciprocate with a kiss of her own.

In a subsequent interview, Berry reflected on the past event: "That was one hell of a night for him, and for me as well."

She added: "To be a part of his moment... tonight I had to pay him back. I've seen him out at parties, but this is the first time since that night that I've seen him on the red carpet somewhere. He's nominated this year. He deserved that."
