The Patriots’ coaching staff and those working closest to Drake Maye will further change in 2025.
Browns offensive assistant Ashton Grant has been hired by the Patriots to be their quarterbacks coach, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reported Thursday.
While Grant’s age isn’t public, he’ll likely become one of the youngest quarterback coaches in the league with the hiring. He’s worked with the Browns since 2020, just three years after his senior season of playing college football.
Grant has plenty of New England ties. He’s a native of Manchester, Connecticut, playing college football at Assumption University in Worcester, starting at wide receiver for four seasons. After winning the Northeast-10’s Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year and being named to an all-conference team three times, Grant earned a spot with the Salt Lake Stallions in the now-defunct AAF.
Shortly after Grant’s playing career ended, he returned to Worcester, joining Holy Cross’ coaching staff as a quality control assistant in 2019. Following a Patriot League title season for Holy Cross, Grant joined the Browns as the team’s Bill Willis Coaching Fellowship recipient in 2020.

Grant’s role with the Browns was extended into the 2021 season, with the team sharing on its website that he worked closely with the running backs and wide receivers over his first two years. He was promoted on Kevin Stefanski’s staff to offensive quality control coach in 2022. He earned another promotion in 2023 to become an offensive assistant, working with the quarterbacks over the last two years.
Grant’s rise up the Browns’ coaching staff allowed him and new Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel to work together this past season. Vrabel was a consultant for the Browns in 2024, primarily working with the tight ends.

Josh McDaniels, who the Patriots re-hired as offensive coordinator, doesn’t have any direct ties to Grant.
As McDaniels replaces Alex Van Pelt at offensive coordinator, Grant will replace TC McCartney as the quarterbacks coach. McCartney, 35, also came from the Browns and was a second-time quarterbacks coach in 2024, being tasked with developing Maye.
McCartney spoke highly of Maye on multiple occasions during his rookie season.
“We picked him third overall. We thought he was good. I promise you we thought he was really good,” McCartney told reporters of Maye in late October. “I think he’s developed, even in the offseason, very, very quickly, which is good. Like I said, until you do it on game day and until you see it all the time, you just don’t know what it’s going to look like. So, just excited to have him out there the last two weeks, and definitely played up to expectation.”
Now, Maye will have to establish a connection with Grant as the first-time quarterbacks coach will look to help the quarterback reach the next level.
