Paul McCartney Remembers Those He Loves and Lost, Ending a Three-Night Run of Surprise Concerts in New York City on Valentine's Day
"This takes me back to the old days playing the Cavern in Liverpool," Paul McCartney said to the intimate crowd in New York City.
âThis takes me back to the old days playing the Cavern in Liverpool,â Paul McCartney said to his audience three songs into his third surprise show at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City on Friday, February 14. Playing to an intimate room at 575 capacity, McCartney set off his three-night run at Bowery on February 11, a second on the 12th, and a final show on Valentineâs Day.
In New York City for the 50th Anniversary of Saturday Night Live, McCartneyâs surprise shows at Bowery were dĂ©jĂ vu from his Valentineâs Day show Irving Plaza, and a slightly larger 1,200-large crowd, in 2015 around the 40th anniversary of SNL.
Except for an approved photographer and videographer, no phones or cameras were allowed in use during the show, which made the night feel closer to the pre-digital days when the Beatles were played at the Cavern Club from â61 through â63. Strangers became close neighbors for the next hour and a half, and McCartney was granted a fully present audience.

Each night was kept within a partly streamlined setlist, with some consistencies, from the opening âA Hard Dayâs Nightâ the first and final show, and the Beatlesâ classics like âBlackbird,â âOb-La-Di, Ob-La-Daâ âLady Madonna,â âIâve Just Seen a Face,â âGot to Get You Into My Life,â âGet Back,â âMy Valentine,â âLet It Be,â âNow and Thenâ and closing âHey Jude,â making he cut all three nights, along with Wingsâ Band on the Run tracks âLet Me Roll Itâ and the closing âNineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five,â and and McCartneyâs solo âCome on to Me.â
Spanning everything from the Beatles and his Wings and solo log of songs, McCartney had enough material to switch things up each set, including playing âFlaming Pie,â a 1997 solo song, for the first in more than 15 years during the second night. On the first night, McCartney added on deeper Wings cuts like âMrs. Vandebilt,â and âLetting Go.â
For the Valentineâs Day show, McCartney added on his 1980Â McCartney IIÂ synthesized âTemporary Secretary,â which was requested by an audience member the first night and worked into the final set, along with Wingsâ âJuniorâs Farm.â
Breaking off to the piano, McCartney started filling the evening with remembrances of people, some who heâs lost but still loves, fitting tributes for Valentineâs Day. He first recounted how his late wife Linda on the more family affair-lined âLet âEm Inâ from Wings and her moniker of Sister Suzy, a nickname given to her by locals while they were in Jamaica. Linda also recorded a song âSeaside Womanâ under the pseudonym Suzy And The Red Stripes in 1977.

Then, McCartney segued into his 2012 love letter âMy Valentine,â and a story of his first holiday with his wife Nancy Shevell when the couple traveled to Morocco, only for the trip to be rained out. âShe said âIt doesnât matter,â recalled McCartney, âand I thought âOh, thatâs niceâ and I ended up writing this song.â
Remembering George Harrison, McCartney, on ukulele, dedicated the Harrison-penned 1969 Beatles classic âSomethingâ to his late friend and bandmate, the first and only play of the song during the three-night run. The Beatlesâ âI Wanna Be Your Manâ also made an appearance on night three.
Before going into the Beatlesâ 2023 song, âNow and Then,â pulled from the late â70s cassette recording by John Lennon and later remixed with the remaining Beatlesâ vocals, McCartney said he always thinks of his friend when heâs in New York. âI canât be here without thinking of John,â he said sitting back on the piano.
The night was filled with plenty of audience singalongs like âOb-La-Di, Ob-La-Daâ and âHey Jude,â which closed the set. âAre you having a good time?â McCartney asked the roaring crowd. âI kinda guessed that.â When an audience member yelled âAre you having a good time?â to McCartney, he answered, âIâm having a great time.â
Before âJude,â McCartney remembered one more person, his mother, who came to him in a dream years after her death and told him not to worry and just âLet It Be,â before tapping into the 1970 Beatles classic.
McCartney closed the night where it ended with the Beatles, with an Abbey Road encore of âGolden Slumbers,â âCarry the Weight,â and âThe End,â the last song collectively recorded by all four Beatles.
âSee you next time,â McCartney said before walking off.
