Peter Jason, ‘Deadwood’ and ‘Prince of Darkness’ Character Actor, Dies at 80
Peter Jason, a character known for his roles in "Deadwood" and "Princess of Darkness," along with many television appearances, has died. He was 80.

Peter Jason, a character actor known for his roles in “Deadwood,” “48 Hrs.” and “Prince of Darkness,” along with his many television appearances, died Thursday in his West Hollywood home. He was 80.
Jason’s death was confirmed by a rep from Tribesmen Pictures, with the cause of death being cancer. On X, “Halloween” director John Carpenter shared a tribute to the actor, writing that “he was a dear friend and I’ll miss him terribly.”
Matthew Asner, son of the late Edward Asner, also shared a tribute.
“My dear, dear friend, the brightest light, most generous soul and gregarious of men, the supremely talented and kind Peter Jason has left the set,” Matthew Asner wrote on Facebook. “I am heartbroken. My dear friend and my father’s best friend, Peter Jason, passed away today. What a loss. He was truly one of the sweetest people on the planet. My heart goes out to his wife and daughter. Peter, I hope you and my dad are up there laughing your asses off.”
Popular on VarietyIn his most notable roles, Jason played Con Stapleton in “Deadwood” for 26 episodes from 2004-2006, Dr. Paul Leahy in Carpenter’s “Prince of Darkness” and the redneck bartender in “48 Hrs.” alongside Eddie Murphy, Nick Nolte, Frank McRae and James Remar.
Jason got his film debut in the Howard Hawks Western “Rio Lobo” with John Wayne. He went on to star in “Impulse” (1984), “Brewster’s Millions” (1985), “They Live” (1988) and “Alien Nation” (1988), working closely with directors Frank Marshall, Walter Hill and Carpenter. Most recently, he was cast by the Coen brothers in “Hail, Caesar!” (2016) and in 2019 reprised his role as Con Stapleton in “Deadwood: The Movie.”
He was also a guest star on many television shows, including “Gunsmoke” (1970), “Murder, She Wrote” (1984), “The Golden Girls” (1985), Steven Spielberg’s “Amazing Stories” (1985) and “Mad Men” (2008).
Jason is survived by his wife, Eileen Rosaly, and two children, Robin and Andrew.

 was traumatized by the abrupt deaths of multiple students who had crushes on her. Plagued by rumors that she was a “witch,” Mi Jeong decided to quit school and stay cooped up inside at home. Even then, her mysterious “curse” followed her, and her father tragically died after saving her from a venomous snake bite.
In a preview that aired at the end of the episode, it was revealed that it was not Mi Jeong’s idea to leave the village; instead, it turned out that she had been pressured to leave by the other villagers. Most shocking of all, Lee Dong Jin (GOT7’s Jinyoung)’s mother Mi Sook (Jang Hye Jin) was seen standing at the forefront of the group asking Mi Jeong to leave. Later, while lying in a hospital bed, Mi Sook confessed to her son, “I was the one who chased that girl away.”
As Mi Sook was always kind, friendly, and generous to not only her son but also her neighbors, her unexpected and seemingly uncharacteristic involvement in Mi Jeong’s departure raised the question of whether something else had happened in the village after her father’s death.
In newly released stills from the drama’s upcoming third episode, a remorseful Mi Sook brings up the incident with Mi Jeong, which had remained painfully buried in her heart. As she lies in the hospital with Dong Jin by her side, Mi Sook catches her son off guard with her shocking confession—and what she has to say ultimately makes Dong Jin determined to figure out and undo the “curse” that afflicts Mi Jeong.
The drama’s production team teased, “This week, the heartbreaking reason why Mi Jeong had no choice but to leave the village—and why Dong Jin wants so badly to help Mi Jeong return to an ordinary life—will be revealed.”
“Dong Jin will begin to dig into Mi Jeong’s ‘pattern of death’ in earnest,” they continued. “The true mystery will begin starting from Episode 3.”
The third episode of “The Witch” will air on February 22 at 9:10 p.m. KST.
