Pew survey: COVID-19 pandemic impacted Americans' lives, divided country
A new poll from Pew Research Center reveals that 75% of Americans say the pandemic took a toll on their personal lives and drove the nation apart.

As the fifth anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic arrives this month, a new Pew survey of American adults looks at attitudes about the nation's pandemic response. Joshua Gunter, cleveland.com
CLEVELAND, Ohio — On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global pandemic. In a new Pew Research Center poll, about three-quarters of Americans said the pandemic took a toll on their own lives, and nearly three-quarters (72%) said the pandemic did more to drive the country apart than to bring it together.
More than 1 million Americans died from COVID-19 over the past five years, according to federal data.
Data in this report came from Pew’s nationally representative panel of about 10,000 randomly selected U.S. adults. The survey was conducted online and via telephone in October, Pew said.
Here are some highlights of the survey findings:
About 63% have tested positive for the virus, were told by a health care provider they had it or are pretty sure they had it. About 21% said COVID-19 is a major threat to the health of the U.S. population as a whole. Just 4% of respondents said they regularly wear a mask, while most never do. Fewer than half of adults surveyed said they planned to get an updated COVID-19 vaccine last fall, much lower than the widespread demand that met the vaccines’ debut. Over half (56%) of Americans said COVID-19 is worse than a cold or flu, compared with 40% who said it was no worse than these other illnesses. A slight majority (56%) said COVID-19 isn’t something we need to worry about much, while 39% said we’re not taking it seriously enough. About 38% felt there should have been fewer restrictions on public activity in their area at the height of the pandemic, while 18% said there should have been more restrictions. The largest share (44%) said the restrictions were about right. About 40% said the country would do a better job responding to a future health emergency, and 16% predicted the country would do worse.Julie Washington covers healthcare for cleveland.com.
