Since Playing Nice hit our screens last week, all eyes have been on actor James Norton as he takes the lead in the ITV drama - but his life off-screen is just as captivating. As part of the four-part series, viewers have seen Jamesâ characterâs life turned upside down after discovering that his toddler was unknowingly swapped with another child at birth.
As part of the role, which has got audiences hooked, the Happy Valley star, 39, has opened up about the âchallengeâ of starring in the show. âThe role is emotionally challenging to play, and it takes you to a dark yet unusual place,â he said.
âStories about bereavement, heartbreak or grief are more familiar. This is a story which encapsulates all of those various forms of pain, but to find out that your child is not your own, is not an experience which people have often.â

But Playing Nice isnât Jamesâ only dramatic role. During his time in A Little Life, an adaptation of Hanya Yanagiharaâs novel, on stage in London, James recalled how he ended up having âpanic attacksâ. Speaking to The Sunday Times , he said: âIt was the hardest thing Iâve done.
âI was naïve. I thought I would be able to apply my philosophy to split work and life, but without sounding overly worthy, it felt so important because some people who came to see the play were survivors of abuse.â He also added that he became a âcatatonic messâ and began experiencing âpanic attacksâ, though explained that by the end of the stint he âfelt incredibleâ.
Away from the world of acting, London-born James recently made headlines when he appeared on CBeebies Bedtime Stories where he read a book that was aimed at helping children and their families understand diabetes. Having been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was in his early twenties, James has previously called his diagnosis âtraumaticâ.

âIt was traumatic, because I'm a terrible hypochondriac anyway,â James once told the Irish Daily Mail. âBut it was also manageable because I had the best role model in my sister, who was training to be a doctor. I called her so many times, worrying about things, which was strange, because I'd always been the protective older brother, keeping an eye on Jessie [his sister] at parties.
âHaving type 1 was particularly hard for her through her teenage years when she had so many other things to contend with. But then, when it was my turn, she got me through it, too.â
When it comes to his relationships, James was previously in a relationship with Hollywood actress Imogen Poots. The pair confirmed their romance in December 2017 and in February 2022, news of their engagement was revealed. Sadly, it appears as though things werenât to be for the pair and by February 2024 they had reportedly gone their separate ways after âgrowing apartâ.
