Much has been made of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's relationship following their very tactile display at the Invictus Games. But for the Duke's former hairdresser Sam McKnight, the focus has been on something else entirely - Harry's hair.

Sam - who was a good friend and personal hair stylist to Princess Diana and would cut Harry and William's hair when they were boys - has taken to Instagram to share his thoughts on Harry's tresses, and made one savage recommendation.

The 69-year-old - who has worked with the likes of Kate Moss and Lady Gaga, and collaborated with fashion houses including Chanel, Fendi, Balmain and Burberry - shared a recent snapshot of Harry taken at the Games.

In a brutal caption, he wrote: "It's time Harry! Many moons ago, when you and your brother were young boys, you both had the most magnificent, thick healthy crowning glories, just like mum. Many an afternoon was spent with me thinning and shaping the topiary!

"However, just like myself, the lush hedging is no more, a mere wisp or two of its former self. All is not lost, however, a good short clip at the barbers (like your big brother has done recently) would look sharp and clean, and take years off that handsome face.

"If I were your age I'd go for a transplant, so much more natural these days, unlike the plug plants of yore. And no need for a quick EasyJet trip to Turkey, you're in California where they have the best! So Harry, from one baldy to another, it's time. As they say in Disneyland, 'Let It Go'. Sent from your old hairdresser, Sam, with love, a wink and a smile."

Sam spoke further about Harry's hair in a piece for The Telegraph and joked that the Duke now looks like a '1950s geography teacher'. He bluntly said: "It's been driving me mad for years, and I don't know why he hasn't had a hair transplant yet or shaved it all off."

Sam continued: "I don't think you lose your looks because you go bald. You have to embrace it. Or you have to make the decision not to embrace it, and have a hair transplant.

"I just find it odd that his hair would be the last thing that he would think about. You see people and you think: 'You're hanging onto these little wisps, let it go and free yourself.' I know it's a psychological thing, hanging onto the wisps, but now's the time to let it go."
