On January 22, Prince Harry reached a settlement with Rupert Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers before their trial began.
The settlement included an eight-figure payout and a public apology admitting legal wrongdoings from 1996 to 2011.
In the apology, NGN admitted to “phone hacking, surveillance and misuse of private information by journalists and private investigators.”
The apology also acknowledged further violations of privacy against Prince Harry and his late mother, Princess Diana.

Prince Harry has settled his lawsuit against News Group Newspapers (NGN), which owns U.K. tabloid The Sun. In a statement issued to Us Weekly on Wednesday, January 22, NGN said it had agreed to pay Harry, 40, “substantial damages” after he accused the company of unlawful information gathering for stories about him and his family. “NGN further apologises to the Duke for the impact on him of the extensive coverage and serious intrusion into his private life as well as the private life of Diana, Princess of Wales, his late mother, in particular during his younger years,” the apology reads, in part.
“We acknowledge and apologise for the distress caused to the Duke, and the damage inflicted on relationships, friendships and family, and have agreed to pay him substantial damages.”

Now, Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, has shared a statement of his own on Instagram following the settlement.

“It takes an enormous amount of guts to take on major media organisations like this, and incredible tenacity to win against them,” Charles wrote alongside a screenshot of a BBC headline noting the “substantial damages” Harry will be paid.

“Well done indeed,” he concluded the statement.
