At the premiere of Captain America: Brave New World in Los Angeles on February 11th, dozens of Pro-Palestine protestors called for a boycott of the new Marvel movie.
Notably, the movie introduces the Marvel Comics character Ruth Bat-Seraph, known as Sabra, an Israeli superhero. Sabra first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1980 as part of The Incredible Hulk. In the comic series, she is sent to live on a kibbutz by the Israeli government after discovering her superpowers in childhood and becomes a Mossad agent.
According to Variety, protestors gathered in Hollywood to hold up signs which read, “Disney supports genocide”, “Boycott Captain America” and “Pray 4 Princess Jasmine.” It’s also alleged they sang “Free, free, free Palestine” and “Disney, Disney you can’t hide.”
Upon the announcement of the character portrayed by Shira Haas in 2022, it was met with a backlash, which led Marvel to issue a statement to Variety explaining Sabra would be “freshly imagined for the screen and today’s audience”, and they planned to install “a new approach with the character”.
Per Marvel, the version of Sabra that appears in Captain America: Brave New World has no ties to Mossad despite her comic book origins.
“She’s Israeli, but she’s not Mossad. Now she works in the U.S. government,” producer Nate Moore said to Variety earlier this month.
Moore continued: “What we thought was interesting was a lot of the characters in the film revolve around President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford). Ruth works within the government under Ross, so her perspective on that character and Sam’s perspective sort of put them on a collision course. She’s first-generation Israeli, but she works within the U.S. government.”
Captain America: Brave New World, which stars Anthony Mackie in the lead role alongside Harrison Ford, is set to arrive in cinemas across the world on February 14th, 2025.
