Queen Elizabeth's Youngest Granddaughter Is Following in Her Military Footsteps
Lady Louise Windsor, Queen Elizabeth's youngest granddaughter, is following in her grandmother's footsteps. The 21-year-old student has reportedly been taking an officer training course at St. Andrews University, hinting that she'll follow in Queen Elizabeth's military tradition.
As the youngest granddaughter of the late Queen Elizabeth, Lady Louise Windsor rarely steps into the spotlight compared to her older cousins like Prince William, Prince Harry, Princess Eugenie, and Princess Beatrice. While the 21-year-old daughter of Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, and Prince Edward rarely makes public appearances along with the rest of the royals, she’s already shown that she’s following in their footsteps by finding romance at St. Andrews, the university where Kate Middleton and Prince William met and fell in love. And according to new reports, the young royal is also taking a leaf from Queen Elizabeth’s book when it comes to a royal military tradition.
Lady Louise, who’s now 16th in line to the throne, has reportedly been supplementing her English degree at St. Andrews University with an Officer Training Course. Per screenshots of Instagram photos shared by The Daily Mail, Lady Louise could be seen standing with other students in a camouflage outfit at a Scottish Martial Traditions evening at Edinburgh Castle, wearing camouflage on her face while standing in a field with her peers, and attending a Remembrance Day parade while wearing a green tartan skirt, a brown belted jacket, and a navy blue cap decorated with red embellishments.

It’s unknown whether Lady Louise plans to become a part of the British army upon graduation, but if she does, she’ll be the first woman since her grandmother to do so. However, Queen Elizabeth’s military legacy (she served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service in 1945) has been kept alive by other royals like Prince William and Prince Harry, who both have backgrounds in the armed forces.

While Lady Louise and her 16-year-old younger brother James, the Earl of Essex, rarely attend royal engagements, Prince William reportedly has big plans for the Edinburgh kids. The Prince of Wales plans to stick with King Charles’s overall model to “slim down the monarchy,” but he reportedly hopes to give "some lesser-known royals more of a spotlight,” according to the New York Post. With their “normal” upbringing, Lady Louise and James are prime candidates.

However, becoming working royals would require both of them to embrace a more public persona. "Should they accept the role, the duo will begin receiving public funding, which in turn would mean they will have to start undertaking public-facing engagements and events to represent the Crown," per the New York Post.
