Bolton, especially the town centre, has become a go-to location for production companies behind some of the biggest dramas, earning it the title Hollywood of the North.

The local authority brings in an average of just over quarter-of-a-million pounds a year from filming.

In the last three years, production companies have paid £1.3M gross to film in the town.

The net profit made from filming from November  2023 to November 2024 stood at £109,301.75, which was  down compared to previous years because of strike.

The net profit is the amount left after costs have been taken off to support filming such as road closures, removing and replacing street furniture to create the set.

This year TV crews have returned to Bolton, most recently to film the gothic horror The Talamasca, produced by AMC and is the latest television adaptation in the Anne Rice chronicles.

“As the post-Covid bounce also began to plateau, film locations across the UK and beyond saw reduced demand during this 12-month period.

“The positive news for Bolton is that demand is once again returning to normal, with major productions like AMC' Talamasca, and Netflix’s ‘Missing You’ which debuted on New Year’s Day.”

“This success has continued in 2025, with Harlan Coben's ‘Missing You’ debuting on Netflix on New Year’s Day featuring scenes shot in Le Mans Crescent and Victoria Square.

“Bolton’s sustained popularity as a film location is a direct result of the council’s hard work to build relationships with the industry, go above and beyond to accommodate requests, and promote our stunning architecture and scenery.

“This brings money into the local economy, showcases Bolton to a global audience, and is a key part of our Visitor Economy Strategy as an increasing number of tourists want to see for themselves where these iconic shows have been filmed.”

The stunning backdrop of Le Mans Crescent can be seen on some of the biggest television dramas in recent time.

They have included Peaky Blinders, which attracted national media attention, to Coronation Street with some of the biggest names in the industry coming to Bolton.

They include Ewan McGregor, Cillian Murphy, Adrian Dunbar and Robert Carlyle to name just a few.

In fact, so popular is Bolton with production crews, Bolton Council opened a ‘film bureau’ in 2019 to deal with the huge number of filming requests it receives.

Producer of the first series of Bancroft, which was filmed in Bolton and starred Sarah Parish, Phil Collinson compared the crescent to New York and Paris.

He told how deliberately chose the town as the location for the series.

Phil said at the time: “Bolton has an incredible Victorian crescent, town hall and civic centre. It really feels like Paris or New York around there with the old cobbled streets and big sandstone buildings.

“Then once you get inside there are long marble corridors and great big open spaces.

“The whole things feels special. Steeped in history.

He added: “The locations are a big star of this show and really important to the atmosphere of the whole thing.”

Red Production, behind the hit Netflix thriller The Stranger, have previously told The Bolton News: "RED Production Company are proud of their Northern roots, basing themselves in Manchester and filming in and around the North.

"For over twenty years RED have filmed several dramas in the area, including the recent Years and Years and current productions Traces and The Stranger.  Bolton has a great feel of a large town without being too big like a city centre.

"It is also very film friendly and always so accommodating to our crews across all our shows."
