Postseason vindication is not yet complete for Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. The trickiest part is still to come, but they moved one more major step in that direction Sunday night.

Allen prevailed in his quarterback duel with Lamar Jackson, although it was less glorious than anticipated. And the Bills just held on to beat Jackson’s Baltimore Ravens, 27-25, in a divisional-round playoff clash at frigid Highmark Stadium to earn another AFC championship game opportunity against an all-too-familiar nemesis.

“It’s what we’ve been working for,” Allen said. “It’s an opportunity to play another week. We don’t want our season to end on a loss.”

Allen ran for two touchdowns in an otherwise modest performance in which he threw for only 127 yards and rushed for 20. But that was enough on a day when Jackson committed two of Baltimore’s three turnovers and the Ravens could not complete a dramatic rally. Tight end Mark Andrews dropped Jackson’s pass on a would-be tying two-point conversion attempt with 1:33 remaining.

The second-seeded Bills will meet the top-seeded Kansas City Chiefs next Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, with a trip to Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9 in New Orleans at stake. It will be the latest in a series of playoff encounters between the teams, all of which have had a distressing outcome for the Bills to this point. The Bills did manage to defeat the Chiefs in a regular season matchup here in November.

The Chiefs will be playing in their seventh consecutive AFC championship game. They’re trying to become the first team to win three straight Super Bowls. The Bills and the Ravens have been among their primary AFC adversaries during their dynastic run. It was the Bills who earned a chance Sunday to redeem themselves, ending the season of the third-seeded Ravens and sending them into another offseason of contemplation and angst.

Jackson said he did not put the blame on Andrews’s drop.

“We’re a team,” Jackson said. “First half, I had two costly turnovers. … He’s making plays happen out there on that field for us. (We) came up short. And like I’ve been saying all season every time we’re in a situation like this, turnovers play a factor. Penalties play a factor.

“Tonight the turnovers — can’t have that s***. And that’s why we lost the game because, as you can see, we were moving the ball wonderfully. It’s hold on to the f***ing ball. Sorry for my language. That s*** is annoying. I’m tired of that s***.”

The Bills perhaps have overachieved this season. They captured their fifth straight AFC East title even after an offseason of retooling in which they traded wide receiver Stefon Diggs and remade their defense. Allen has had an otherworldly season and could be rewarded with his first MVP award if the voters pick him over Jackson in what is regarded as a tight race, based on their regular season exploits. But Allen and the Bills earned bragging rights Sunday.

“I’ve got nothing but love for Lamar,” Allen said. “He’s one of the greatest to ever put a uniform on.”

The Bills arrived at this game by overwhelming the Denver Broncos in the first round of the postseason. The opposition was far sturdier Sunday, but the Bills remained in the running to secure their first Super Bowl appearance since they lost four straight in the early 1990s.

Their current run of success has included a loss to the Chiefs in the AFC championship game in the 2020 season. On Sunday, the Bills ended a string of three straight defeats in the divisional round since then. Two of those losses came to the Chiefs, and the other was to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Allen and the Bills have had to cope with the anguish of being a team annually on the cusp of greatness without ever actually achieving it. Now they have another chance to exorcise those postseason demons against the Chiefs.

“Everyone was saying this and that about us,” Allen said. “We didn’t have enough talent. We weren’t good enough to be in these positions. Our guys just continued to work hard. … I think you saw how much we played for each other there.”

The Ravens again failed in their bid to reach their first Super Bowl with Jackson as their quarterback. He could secure his third MVP award, but the Ravens’ postseason record with Jackson as their starter dropped to 3-5. They were unable to advance to what would have been an AFC title game rematch with the Chiefs. The Ravens, as the No. 1 seed, lost last season’s AFC championship game to the Chiefs in Baltimore.

“We didn’t play good enough as a team to win,” linebacker Roquan Smith said. “And that’s what it’s all about.”

This was a rematch of a Week 4 game won handily by the Ravens, 35-10, in Baltimore. This time, the Ravens were without Pro Bowl wide receiver Zay Flowers, who was inactive because of a knee injury that he suffered in the regular season finale.

The Bills led 21-10 after a first half in which Allen ran for two touchdowns and Jackson had a touchdown pass but threw an interception and lost a fumble. “M-V-P!” chants rang through the stadium as Allen stood along the back of the end zone and flexed after running through Ravens tacklers on his second touchdown run 16 seconds before halftime.

The Ravens started well with Jackson’s 16-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Rashod Bateman on the opening drive. The Bills had an immediate reply with tailback Ray Davis’s one-yard touchdown run.

The Bills could not capitalize after Jackson threw an interception to safety Taylor Rapp. The Ravens weren’t as fortunate when Jackson, after a high shotgun snap, lost a fumble while being tackled by safety Damar Hamlin. Von Miller recovered for the Bills and raced 39 yards before being caught. That set up Allen’s one-yard touchdown sneak.

The Ravens got a 26-yard field goal by Justin Tucker on a drive on which the Bills probably got away with a late hit out of bounds on Jackson. The Bills benefited from a pass-interference call on the Ravens on their way to Allen’s bulldozing four-yard touchdown.

Tucker’s 47-yard field goal pulled the Ravens within 21-13 in the third quarter. Henry had a five-yard touchdown run later in the quarter, but the Ravens failed on a two-point conversion attempt. The Bills’ Tyler Bass connected on a 51-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter.

Andrews committed the Ravens’ third turnover by losing a fumble after a catch, being stripped of the ball by Bills linebacker Terrel Bernard. That led to Bass’s 21-yard field goal with 3:29 left; Bills Coach Sean McDermott opted for an eight-point lead instead of a fourth-and-goal try from the Baltimore 2-yard line.

“I considered going for it,” he said.

Jackson then led the Ravens on an 88-yard scoring drive. He threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to tight end Isaiah Likely, then made an on-target throw to Andrews on the two-point try. But Andrews could not make the catch on the right side of the end zone. The Bills recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock to secure another matchup with Kansas City.
