Don’t expect life to change very much for most

St. James, L.I.: I am not and have never been a MAGA Republican. We have a new president who is besmirched by the vast majority of writers to this page. Please allow me to assuage your concerns. As a college student in the early 1980s, matriculated in the studies of government and politics, I had the pleasure of attending the classes of Dr. Arthur Belonzi, a prominent political scientist and an advisor to several presidents of both parties. He explained that the policies and programs of the party in power at any given time affect only 25% of citizens: the 10% who are the richest, the 10% who are the poorest and the 5% serving in the armed forces. The other 75% of citizens will not have their lives significantly altered.

I am now in my 60s. I am not a member of the three aforementioned groups of citizens. As I reflect on my life, I realize that the good Dr. Belonzi was correct. There were administrations where I paid more taxes offset by other administrations where I paid less. There were laws and regulations instituted to intrude upon my employment and personal freedoms offset by others that afforded me greater protections.

The party in power did not significantly alter my employment, familial relationships, economic status or my personal freedoms. I am sure there are exceptions, and I don’t intend to portray a myopic interpretation of this view. However, the vast majority of American citizens will be compelled to wake up in the morning, go to work and carry on with their lives today exactly as they did every day for the four preceding years. Carmine E. Esposito

Undesirable attendees

Mamaroneck, N.Y.: It is curious that Donald Trump, who has pretended for some time to be “America First,” is the first American president to invite foreign leaders to his inauguration. Doubly so, as these leaders are not necessarily our closest allies or even allies of democracy. Paul Matthews

Stay alert

Jamaica: We the people (middle-class and poor) better start paying attention. The Republicans, the rich, the transition team and the president-elect felon want to take away everything that President Biden, Barack Obama and the Democrats passed to help us survive. You all should be reading and listening to the news and media. We are in for a fight for our lives to survive these next four years. Pay attention! God bless America! Charlene Black

Tit for tat

East Meadow, L.I.: Michelle Obama said she isn’t going to Trump’s inauguration, I guess because Trump didn’t go to Joe Biden’s inauguration. Wait, who was it who said, “When they go low, we go high”? Jeff Tuck

Feigned comradery

Dartmouth, Mass.: Have MAGA voters begun to feel disrespected and scammed by all the promises made by Trump? Two generally accepted explanations for his meteoric rise and reelection are that millions of Americans believed they had been forgotten and scorned by previous administrations, especially those of the Democrats. And Trump, with his manipulative advisors, was able to foist all blame of outrageous price hikes of consumer goods and services on Biden and Democratic legislators. They were convinced that Trump, despite being numbered in the billionaire class, was sympathetic to their economic distress and understood their anger at being ignored and condescended to by the Democratic establishment. But within the period preceding his inauguration, Trump has clearly indicated that prices may remain high and resistant to his influence. These pronouncements should be a signal that all those promises and supposed feelings of simpatico were insincere and manipulative. Betty Ussach

A new age

Scranton, Pa.: “When the moon is in the 7th house / And Jupiter aligns with Mars / Then peace will guide the planets / And love will steer the sun / This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius!” To the tune of that verse from the 1967 hit musical “Hair!” I submit the following for 2025, entitled “Oligarchy is Here!”: The loon is back in the White House / Dreaming of taking over Greenland, and flying cars / Talking about our geese getting eaten by immigrants / And if he could, Elon Musk would buy the sun / This is the dawning of a few billionaires ruling all of us! Vin Morabito

Diminished stature

White Plains, N.Y.: I remember watching the insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021 and thinking that I felt like I was living in a Third World country. Now, as a 34-time convicted felon, con man and coward is going to the White House, I know I’m living in one. Very, very sad! Steve Howe

Nicer guy

Long Island City: I remember the late Don Rickles, an insult comic who had class and always said to be proud of who and what you are. I met him once after he left the Carnegie Deli in Manhattan. I can assure you that he had a brain, and would never say at a Trump rally that Puerto Rico is a floating island of garbage. You can write it in stone! Steve Chaddock

Varied versions

Massapequa, L.I.: When I was growing up in the ’70s and ’80s, we didn’t have all these ridiculous terms like “misinformation” or “disinformation,” and we didn’t have “fake news.” We simply had one term — we called it “different opinions,” and everyone was entitled to theirs. Tom Ascher

Killing spree

Long Branch, N.J.: It appears that we have a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Did someone inform the IDF? If not, they will continue to bomb schools, hospitals and churches. The IDF has no problem killing hundreds of innocent people in order to kill a few Hamas. Lenzy Kelley

All-powerful

Manhattan: Everyone knows, or should know, that Donald Chump is the reason for a ceasefire in the Middle East — just as we all should know that it’s him, and only him, who decides who wins the Super Bowl. Raymond McEaddy

Broken deal

Middle Village: Re “Aim to teach UFT prez a lesson in defeat” (Jan. 16): I take offense at the term “insurgent groups.” We are not rebels taking up arms against authority. We are NYC retirees who are simply trying to maintain the same level of health care that we were promised and have had for the past 60 years. It is the unions that are trying to change the terms of our contract retroactively. When we took our city jobs, we understood that our salaries were going to be less than a private sector job would pay. We were willing to make the sacrifice because we would get premium health care when we retired. This is called deferred compensation. It is reprehensible of the city to change the terms of our contract after we fulfilled our part. Lee Rottenberg

What a character

Brooklyn: Sad to hear of the passing of the Milwaukee Brewers’ longtime announcer Bob Uecker. He was hilarious in movies and TV ads. I’ll always remember him fondly in those funny Miller Lite commercials. Hopefully, up in heaven Bob finally gets his well-deserved seat in the front row. Jimmy Orr

At our expense

Manhattan: Your recent article (“Don’t ignore climate, Don,” Jan. 14) neatly casts the dilemma faced by our incoming president: Continue to deny the importance of climate breakdown or join the growing hordes of Americans finally flipped by the wind, drought and wildfire evidence daily scorching their screens. While he frets, our governor could be adding to her recent home state climate accomplishments (congestion pricing and signing the Climate Change Superfund Act). One way would be to enact a robust and fair “cap and invest” law. Promised in 2022, it would use taxes levied on excessive fossil fuel emissions for infrastructure resilience, like the weatherization of homes or rebates for high energy costs. But suddenly, in the face of corporate pressure, she’s done a complete about-face. Gov. Hochul still promises money for climate action, but we are going to be paying for it instead of polluters. What’s this about “affordability,” Kathy? Thomas A. Caffrey

Simple enough

Brooklyn: I live in the great state of New York, one of the most liberal states in this country. Each election, I receive a voter identification that the election workers scan in. Why don’t they have it in other states? Republicans keep asking for it. Harvey Kaplan
