A comedy film sequel that sparked widespread disappointment among movie fans is set to air on TV tonight (Saturday, February 15).
The 2003 film, starring Reese Witherspoon, will be broadcast on ITV at 6:55 PM and can also be streamed on ITVX.
Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde was released shortly after its well-received predecessor, Legally Blonde. In the original film, Witherspoon played Elle Woods, a sorority queen who unexpectedly gets dumped by her boyfriend Emmett before he attends law school.
Determined to win him back, Elle follows her ex to Harvard and eventually becomes a successful law student, defying the 'ditzy' blonde stereotype.
The 2001 release earned widespread praise for its comedic take on challenging gender stereotypes. However, Surrey Live reports the sequel failed to resonate with audiences.

Picking up after Elle's graduation, the second instalment follows her mission to persuade US politicians to ban animal testing, a task that proves more daunting than conquering Harvard.
Despite focusing on the beloved character, viewers found the sequel's plot to be 'cartoonish'.
One Rotten Tomatoes user wrote: "The plot was frustratingly tedious, the dialogue was empty, and the behaviour of each character was cartoonish. Predictable and pointless, Legally Blonde 2 is a film that I hope to never watch again."
On IMDB, another user commented: "[...] The plot itself was too contrived. There wasn't a single believable character in the [film], and Witherspoon was just a caricature of the original movie's heroine."
A second IMDB user was less than enthralled with the comedy, awarding it a mediocre four out of ten stars and lamenting: "The running time is a brief 95 minutes though it feels a lot longer than that. The film felt a lot longer since the movie just wasn't funny. There were a few funny moments though most of the jokes this film delivered were, at best, small chuckles."

They questioned the comedic impact of the film further, stating emphatically, "Do a few funny moments redeem this film? No, this sequel is one of the worst sequels of 2003 and one of the worst comedies of 2003."
Mirroring this view, another viewer dismissed the humour, saying: "What we have here is a comedy with no good jokes. Not a single one. This movie's idea of "comedy" is for Elle to find out her chihuahua is gay. And then in the very next scene, the chihuahua is wearing a studded leather vest. Sigh."
In Legally Blonde 2, there's a moment where Elle Woods finds out her cherished chihuahua Bruiser is gay after he shows affection to another male dog at his doggy day spa meant to be a comedic highlight of the film.
Yet, this joke failed to land with some viewers, as evidenced by one comment shared online: "The way they responded to the dogs being gay and gay people in general was so immature and ridiculous. Total flop."

Despite these opinions criticising the film's attempts at humour, Legally Blonde 2 did manage to charm others into positive reviews, with one viewer raving on Rotten Tomatoes: "Hilarious and fabulous! You must see this movie!"
"This movie is great, I like how they continued on from the first Legally Blonde. They stayed original, the writer wrote the perfect sequel unlike many movies that make sequels this one was actually enjoyable. I don't understand the bad rating of this movie but it's really underrated [...]," another fan defended.
Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde will air on ITV2 at 6.55PM today (February 15).
