Kate Garraway speaks to Renée Zellweger about losing Derek
Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway was seen being consoled by actress Renée Zellweger as she discussed the tragic death of her husband.
Kate caught up with Bridget Jones star Renée Zellweger ahead of the release of Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy. During the chat, about the fourth film, the GMB host opened up about the loss of her husband Derek, and the parallels between herself and Bridget.
In the new film, it's revealed Bridget's husband, Mark Darcy, played by Colin Firth died five years earlier leaving behind Bridget and their two children. Kate lost her husband Derek at the age of 56 in January 2024. It came after he had been living with extreme complications from Covid since contracting the disease in March 2020.

Kate then continued to ask: "So what is it for you, do you tap into a personal loss?"
"First off all I'm sorry," Renée responded. "That's very fresh sad, it's probably raw still for you," as the GMB host agreed. Renée continued: "You feel like your cells change, and it's really hard to explain that to somebody how hasn't been through it. But in our stage in life it's the rare person who hasn't yet. It's an inevitability, so certainly, I'm familiar with that.
The star didn't rule out another instalment of the fan favourite films (Image:
ITV)"In respect to Bridget, it's an exploration of what that might look like for her. She's never deterred or defeated. She's always looking forward and she's always finding a way even though things don't work out according to plan."
Elsewhere in the chat, Renée expressed her love for London, exclaiming it "felt like home." Speaking about the California wildfires, the star said she "didn't have a friend who didn't have to evacuate. It's just tragic for everyone who lives around there".
Will this be the final instalment of the Bridget Jones sequel? Renée isn't saying no" "I hope that something sparks in Helen that she'll want to share with Bridget again!" It's been over two decades since the first film was released in cinemas, and the buzz surrounding Helen Fielding's adaption is still as high as ever as fans look forward to the release next week.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy will be released in cinema on 13 February 2025.
