It's easy to think of monarchs as larger-than-life figures, the sort who might tower over us mere mortals.
There’s an awful lot to be said for being tall, after all. Numerous studies have linked height to success climbing the career ladder, earning more money and overall physical wellbeing.
Tall men have also been found to be more likely to work in leadership roles, such as being a politician. It seems we really do look up to tall men, in every sense.
It's little wonder, then, if we associate stature with status. Who wants a case of Lese Majeste?
Studies have shown that children from wealthier families and countries are, on average, taller than those from poorer ones.
This could be due to the fact that two key ingredients of growth during childhood are nutrition, which builds bone and tissue, and disease, which hinders it.
Does this mean that fine dining and expert medical care helps kingly types pile on the inches?
Possibly. Yet US scientists have found that only 25 per cent of height comes from our environment, the rest from the genes we inherit.
So which regal figures truly match our towering expectations - and who falls sadly short?
Here, based on the principle that the camera never lies, MailOnline presents its unique estimates of the tallest - and most pocket-sized - kings around the world.
Coming in at first place is King Felipe VI of Spain, who stands at 6ft 5' tall (1.97m), according to the Guinness World Records official site.
The monarch towered over members of the British Royal Family, including the late Queen Elizabeth II, in 2017.
The king had to stoop and bow when he was welcomed by the monarch at Horse Guards Parade while visiting London on a state visit.
Felipe ascended the throne on June 19, 2014, after the abdication of his father. He used his tall frame to his advantage when he competed for Spain's sailing team at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.
His reign has been marked by his condemnation of the Catalan independence referendum that led to the 2017–18 Spanish constitutional crisis and moves towards greater transparency in royal affairs.
In November he and his wife Queen Letizia were pelted with mud by furious locals after they visited Valencia where 200 people had died in devastating floods.

Hans Adam II has been the head of state (the prince) of Liechtenstein since 1989.
The 6ft 4/5' royal has been in charge of the fourth-smallest country in Europe, which has a population of 40,000 and is double-landlocked, for decades.
However, he does perhaps have the most power, as it still operates as a semi-constitutional monarchy, allowing him to make decisions that affect the country.

Philippe is King of the Belgians and stands at an imposing 6ft 3'.
He has been king since his father King Albert II announced that he would abdicate on July 3, 2013.
His 23-year-old daughter Princess Elisabeth, Duchess of Brabant, stands at 5ft 8/9' and is first in the line of succession.

Prince William is the tallest member of the Royal Family and stands at 6ft 3", towering over his relatives.
He stood high from a young age and was over six feet when he was just 16.
But his tall stature is a bit of an anomaly in the House of Windsor.
Royal author Tina Brown believes his height came from his mother's 'Spencerian' genes, which allowed him to stretch far above his father.

His son, Prince George, is expected to be just as tall, or even taller, when he is fully grown.
When William becomes king he will be the second tallest King in 300 years.
The tallest British monarch was Edward IV at 6ft 4½'. When suited and booted in armour the king, who lived from 1442 to 1483, was said to stand at roughly 6ft 7'.
The surprisingly tall medieval royal bucks historical trends in height, as broadly speaking, humans get taller as nations become richer and quality of life improves.
This is why all Western countries have seen massive increases in height since the 19th century.
A study by experts at Imperial College London found that British men had grown from an average of 5ft 6' in 1914 to 5ft 10' by 2014.
Women sprouted even more, from just 5ft a century ago to an average 5ft 5' today.
The heir apparent to the Danish throne, Crown Prince Christian has been dubbed as 'Europe's most eligible bachelor'.
Despite only turning 19 in October, he stands at around 6ft 2' but could, in the future, continue to grow taller.
He is currently having a gap year in an undisclosed location in East Africa.
Christian revealed he had enjoyed a varied and culturally rich experience so far, having worked with wildlife, built new houses and even managed to fit in football with the locals.

Pavlos of Greece, stands at around 6ft 2' tall. His father served as king from 1964 until 1973, when the Greek monarchy was abolished, before eventually dying in 2023.
His father was tied by both blood and long-standing friendships to the British Royal Family due to his 40 years spent in London after being forced into exile following the abolition.
Pavlos' father, King Constantine II, was a close friend, sailing companion and first cousin to the late Queen Elizabeth's six-foot-tall husband Prince Philip.
Although he is now the head of the former Royal House of Greece, Pavlos does not have an official role in Greek society.

The 57-year-old Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands has been ruling over his country since 2013.
The Dutch are the tallest nation in the world, with men averaging 6ft and women 5ft 5', and their king keeps up the standard with his own impressive 6ft 2¾' of height.
The UK is lagging far behind them, with the typical male Brit measuring around 5ft 10 - 31st place in the global height ranking. British women measure an average 5ft 3' - that's 38th place in the rankings.
In comparison, men in the United States measure about 5ft 8' and women 5ft 3'.
At the other end of the scale, East Timor, an island in South East Asia, is home to the smallest men, who measure 5ft 2' on average.

Although King Frederik of Denmark loses out to some of the tallest royals by a sizeable margin, he is the newest European monarch.
The 56-year-old only acceded to the throne on January 14, 2024.
He is married to, and has four children with, the Australian marketing consultant Mary Donaldson (5ft 6'), who he met while attending the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.

Charles' height is the same as the UK men's national average at 5ft 10'.
He seems to have ended up there after inheriting his mother Queen Elizabeth's average height of 5ft 3' and his father Prince Philip's slightly above average 6ft.
As a younger man, Charles used his solid height to his advantage in sports - becoming a strong polo player.

Charles' height became a slight problem when he was married to Princess Diana as she was the same height as him
His Majesty is shorter than both William (6ft 3') and Harry (6ft 2'), although he is taller than his wife Queen Camilla (5ft 8').
But things were more complicated when he was married to Princess Diana as she was the same height as him.
It has been suspected that efforts were made to make Charles look taller than the Diana both before and after their wedding at St Paul's Cathedral.
Although it is less of an issue now, when they married in the 80s it was more noticed.
In photographs they would often arrange each other to give the illusion that Charles was taller.
To avoid awkward fashion mishaps while on engagements, the princess would often avoid heels to appear shorter when standing next to her husband.
King Vajiralongkorn of Thailand stands at 5ft 7' and is the wealthiest monarch in the world with a net worth of around $43 billion.
But his subjects are careful not to make fun of his small stature because in Thailand the laws of lèse-majesté (offending the dignity of a reigning monarch) ensure the royal family is held above criticism, let alone mockery.
There, the monarchy have godlike status. They are worshipped and idolised: saying one word against the king, queen, heir apparent or regent — or even their pets — has traditionally led to 15 years in prison.
