Rio Ferdinand feared the worst before VAR overturned a late Everton penalty in their draw with Manchester United.
The Toffees were awarded a spotkick when former Red Devil Ashley Young went down under challenges from Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire. Andy Madley was instructed to review the decision however and David Moyes' side were ultimately denied the opportunity to earn a late win at Goodison Park having already given up a two-goal lead.
While Ruben Amorim thought the initial decision was as consequence of a 'soft touch', Ferdinand was surprised that Madley was required to go back on his conclusion. United's head coach assessed: "It was not from what I saw. I think it was a soft penalty it was clear."
Former defender Ferdinand was not convinced however, and despite United's fightback through Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte, he was not convinced by the side's performance either. The pundit believes United cannot continue in such a manner.
"I was fearing the worst", admitted Ferdinand on TNT Sports. "I saw VAR getting involved and the referee go over to the monitor. I was surprised it wasn’t given to be honest.
“He had his arms around Ashley Young’s waist did Harry Maguire. And when you put your hands on people, you give the referee a chance to make a decision.”
“I questioned this team, whether they had desire and enough fight. But goals change games. Then we saw there was fight and desire. But they can’t continue like this. They’ve got to start games on the front foot.
“They were positive towards the end. That’s where they’ve got to look [to improve]."
Everton's Ashley Young appeared to have been brought down by Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire
Ferdinand had earlier been unforgiving in his analysis and described the performance as 'embarrassing. "I don't know if I've seen a United team this bad. It's been embarrassing in all facets of the game," he said.
"Yes we can talk about quality but I think one thing that's unforgivable is a lack of fight, a lack of desire, not getting near people. There's been instants in this game, especially the second half, where Man United need to look at Everton and take examples. The ability to track back to run in transitions and fight for balls. Embarrassing to sit here and watch."
In contrast former Everton winger Theo Walcott believes it was the correct decision to not award the penalty. "It is disappointing for Everton not to get the result, they will be kicking themselves," he said.
"I totally agree with the referee, I don't think that was a penalty. Naturally [when you are challenged] you don't fall that way."
