Rio Ferdinand shares Mathys Tel Man United transfer theory after Tottenham snub
Latest Manchester United news with Rio Ferdinand's verdict on transfer target Mathys Tel
Rio Ferdinand has delivered his verdict on a potential move to Manchester United for Mathys Tel. Ruben Amorim's side have been linked with a late January swoop for the 19-year-old Bayern Munich sensation.
Earlier in the transfer window, Tel expressed his desire to leave Bayern after struggling for game time since Vincent Kompany's appointment last summer. In fact, Tel has failed to score in 15 appearances across all competitions for the Bundesliga side this season, though he has started just four matches.
Tottenham had appeared to be leading the race for Tel's signature and lodged a ÂŁ50million bid to sign him. However, Tel rejected a move to Ange Postecoglou's side and has since appeared to make a U-turn on his future. The Athletic report that Tel is now set to stay at Bayern this month.
It's added that Tel is expected to reassess his future in the summer. United could reignite their interest in Tel at the end of the season as Amorim tries to strengthen his squad. Chelsea, Arsenal and Aston Villa were among the others that were keen on signing the teenage Frenchman in January.
Former United defender Ferdinand was not surprised that there was interest in him. "Mathys Tel, French kid, he is a mad talent," United legend Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel.
"Iâve seen him close up, come on in a game in the Champions League for Bayern Munich and score a goal, a really good finish. Centre-forward, can play different areas of the striker role, has pace, has ability.
"I think heâs been at Bayern Munich for a while and hasnât been getting the opportunities he wants and that his ability deserves. He needs to play.
"Could he be one that Man United go for? I think in the strikerâs position Man United needs some experience.
"We got [Joshua] Zirkzee, weâve got [Rasmus] Hojlund, two players I think need somebody around them who they can go, 'okay, thatâs what you do', and can talk to them and show them how to become the real deal centre-forward.
âI think thatâs what weâre missing in that area of the football pitch. So to buy another young one when youâve got Chido [Obi Martin] as well who youâve bought from Arsenal, are you then stopping his way into the first-team?
"So thereâs a lot to consider. If Tel was to sign from Bayern Munich on a permanent maybe one of the other two goes, maybe that happens."
