American soul giant Roberta Flack has died.
The singer suffered a stroke in 2018, and had endured a number of health difficulties in recent years. A statement from Roberta Flack’s family confirms her passing, noting that she died peacefully surrounded by family.
“We are heartbroken that the glorious Roberta Flack passed away this morning, February 24, 2025,” it reads. “She died peacefully surrounded by her family. Roberta broke boundaries and records. She was also a proud educator.”
Born in North Carolina, Roberta Flack was initially fascinated by classical and religious music. A prodigious talent, she was accepted to Howard University on a scholarship, with her incredible talents spread across folk, jazz, soul, and beyond.
Soul jazz great Les McCann is credited with helping Roberta Flack achieve her big break, introducing her music to execs at Atlantic Records. Debut album ‘First Take’ followed in 1969, and the title should be taken literally – it was recorded in 10 hours, front to back.
Reworking the folk song ‘First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ into a soul staple, it became the ultimate sleeper hit – placed in a 1971 Clint Eastwood movie, the song eventually topped the American charts, before becoming a global smash.
Earning a Grammy award, Roberta Flack followed this with a string of essential releases, including her mighty ‘Killing Me Softly With His Song’.
An incredible vocalist, she linked with soul legend Donny Hathaway for a run of releases, while maintaining her own artistic autonomy.
Recording with everyone from Michael Jackson to Leonard Cohen, Roberta Flack continued writing, recording, producing, and touring into the 21st century – she released a Beatles tribute album in 2012, for example.
Tributes are pouring in for a vocalist who defined femininity within soul and R&B. Jennifer Hudson comments: “one of the great soul singers of all time. Rest well, Ms Flack. Your legacy lives on”.
Rest in power, Roberta Flack.
