The Rocky River City Schools are one step closer to hiring a new superintendent as interviews were conducted Feb. 1 with two finalists, Kristine Michael and Adham Schirg.
Dr. Kristine Michael, superintendent for the Northridge Local Schools, is a finalist for the Rocky River City Schools superintendent position.Northridge Local Schools
After receiving 13 applications for the superintendent position, the field was narrowed down to six and those semifinalists were interviewed Jan. 25. The Board of Education then selected two finalists to continue in the process.
âWe anticipate making a final selection this spring, allowing time to complete the necessary steps for a smooth and successful transition,â said Kelly Rucker Frindt, president, Rocky River City Schools Board of Education, in an email. âCommunity input gathered through interviews, surveys, and focus groups played a key role in shaping the leadership profile that continues to guide our selection process. The two finalists were chosen because they align with this leadership profile, which was developed through extensive community engagement.â
When asked if the Board plans to introduce the finalists to the community and staff before making a final selection, Frindt did not respond to the question.
Michael is currently superintendent for the Northridge Local Schools. Located 20 miles outside of Columbus, the district serves approximately 1,200 students. She was named superintendent in 2023, after serving as the districtâs assistant superintendent for three years.
She holds a Doctor of Education (Educational Leadership) degree from Miami University (Oxford). She was also assistant superintendent at
Buckeye Valley Local Schools (2,250 students) from August 2015 to 2020.
Other experience includes serving as director of curriculum and student Services (preK-grade 12) at the Mt. Gilead Exempted Village Schools. Her teaching experience includes fourth-grade at the Granville Exempted Village School District.
âIt appears the district needs a dedicated leader with the passion, academic expertise, and vision to help the district continue to innovate and grow to meet the challenges our children will face after graduation,â Michael wrote in her cover letter for the application. âIn addition, it needs a leader like me who has skills such as the ability to build a culture based on trust and learning, both in the schools and the community. Skills like vision, interpersonal communication, and the ability to build consensus. One who values the importance of tradition in a community while understanding how to blend those traditions with innovation to continue to move a district forward.â
Schirg is currently superintendent for Fairbanks Local School District. The district serves approximately 1,075 students and is located northwest of the Columbus area. He was named superintendent in 2019 after serving as a principal in Worthington CitySchools (Columbus area). His teaching experience includes Genoa Middle School (Westerville City Schools).
Adham Schirg, superintendent for the Fairbanks Local Schools is currently a finalist for the Rocky River City Schools open superintendent position.Fairbanks Local Schools
He is a doctoral candidate taking courses through Miami University.
âPublic schools have influenced my life in innumerable ways,â Schirg wrote on his application. âBeing able to serve the Rocky River community would truly be an honor
and one that would never be taken for granted. Developing strong community relations, instructional leadership, open communications, and vision/mission establishment are just a few of the premier qualifications I offer that match the Superintendent
role available with Rocky River City School District.â
Current district interim superintendent Elizabeth Anderson was a semifinalist for the superintendent position. She will serve in the interim role until the new superintendent contract begins.
As reported in a previous cleveland.com story, longtime district Superintendent Michael Shoaf officially retired from his post Jan. 9, nearly a full year earlier than originally planned. Shoaf had said last year that he would step down at the end of 2025, agreeing to stay on through the first half of the 2025-2026 school year to help his replacement transition into the job.
The board retained the services of Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA), a consulting firm based in Illinois that specializes in assisting school boards in identifying and recruiting executive-level educational leaders, to conduct/oversee the search process.
