Diehard Scotland and Celtic fan, Sir Rod Stewart, has paid tribute to footballing legend Denis Law following his death at the age of 84 on Friday.

Rocker Rod, 80, posted a photo of the pair taken in 1998 donning matching Scotland tops with their arms around each other.

He captioned the picture: ‘Farewell my hero, rest in peace.’

The singer was born in England but his late father, Robert, was raised in Leith and Edinburgh.

Stewart and Law, who was capped 55 times for his country and joint top scorer along with Sir Kenny Dalglish with 30 goals, were long-time pals.

Following the former Man Utd striker being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and dementia in 2021, Sir Rod described him as the “best football player”, a “hero” and “legend”.

He urged Law at the time to “hang in there”.

Sir Rod is the latest in a lengthy list to pay tribute to Law, the only Scottish player to have won the Ballon d’Or.

He picked up the European Footballer of the Year award in 1964 after United won the FA Cup in his first season and were runners-up in the league the following year, with Law scoring 46 goals – more than any United player before or since.

Liverpool icon and fellow Scot Sir Kenny, said his thoughts are with Denis’ family, adding: “Thanks for the great memories. My hero.”
