McIlroy was competing in a practice round alongside Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry on Tuesday when he was filmed approaching a patron.
The Northern Irishman asks the spectator, 'Let me see your phone' - and proceeds to take it before walking off.
The social media user who posted the video claims McIlroy hit a wayward tee shot into a water hazard and the fan shouted 'just like 2011 at Augusta' before the incident occurred.
This would be a reference to the 35-year-old's infamous collapse at the Masters - when he held a four-shot lead after 54 holes and shot 80 in the final round.
And 14 years on, it remains a sensitive topic for McIlroy - as the Green Jacket continues to elude him in his quest to win all four majors and complete a career grand slam.
It has not been confirmed by official sources what happened before or after the 16-second clip - and what became of the phone remains unknown.
The fan was seemingly taken aback by McIlroy's actions, freezing with his hand outstretched and a bewildered look on his face.
McIlroy was not asked about the incident in his press conference on Wednesday - as the video only began to circulate online afterwards.

The world no.2 won golf's unofficial fifth major in 2019 and already has a victory to his name on the PGA Tour this season.
However, he followed victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with two disappointing performances at the Genesis Invitational and - most recently - the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

"It feels good," McIlroy said of his game during a pre-tournament interview.
"I'd say even the two finishes post-Pebble have been almost like the worst that they could be.
"I finished bad on Sunday at Bay Hill. I finished bad on Sunday at Torrey Pines, as well.
"But the one thing I would say is the turnaround in my putting from Torrey to Bay Hill was great.
"I finished, I think, fifth [actually seventh] in putting last week, so to see that turn around was really encouraging.
"That's something for me to be really encouraged about going into this week, obviously, and then the next few months."
