Rory McIlroy smashed tee-box marker in fit of rage at Arnold Palmer Invitational
Rory McIlroy's wrath was on full display at last year's Arnold Palmer Invitational at the Bay Hill Golf Course, smashing one of the tee boxes on the eighth hole to smithereens in frustration
Rory McIlroy will want to forget last year's Arnold Palmer Invitational after his explosive outburst.
The Northern Irishman was far from his best at the Bay Hill Golf Course last March, finishing in a measly T21 with an overall score of one-under-par. But it wasn't just his poor performances on the greens and fairways that had golf fans talking throughout the event.
After suffering a bogey on the seventh, McIlroy already looked frustrated as he headed for the eighth – and within seconds of letting his fairway wood fly, he was disgusted by his ball's flight path, raising his club to the tee marker on his left as though he was about to unleash his rage upon it.
Video footage captured from the hole then showed McIlroy's ball landing in the rough down the course, as a loud clattering was heard coming from off screen. When the camera returned to the tee box, the marker on the left-hand side was still in tact, but the right one was in pieces and laying on its side.
McIlroy ultimately bogeyed the eighth hole to go out two-over-par, but ultimately pulled it back to make the cut after bagging six birdies on the back nine. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler won the tournament with a total score of 15-under-par, five strokes clear of second-place Wyndham Clark.
Despite having not won a major since the 2014 PGA Championship in Valhalla, McIlroy is off to a cracking start with the PGA Tour in 2025. The 27-time Tour winner finished T4 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic alongside Niklas Norgaard in January, before clinching his first win of the year at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with a whopping score of 21-under – two strokes clear of second-place Shane Lowry.
Speaking after the event, the current World No. 2 said: "You know, some people would argue that the golf courses I have won on are not up to like a Pebble Beach or obviously an Augusta or whatever. But yeah, to win at one of the cathedrals of golf is really, really cool.

"I knew today was going to be tough, was going to be exciting. There were so many guys around the lead, and you know, with it being Pebble Beach I had to put that to the back of my mind and just go out there and try to shoot a score which I was able to.
"But yeah, really cool to have that walk up 18 sort of take it all in, was very cool."
The 2025 Arnold Palmer Invitational wraps up at Bay Hill Golf Course on Sunday.
