Rory McIlroy spends almost â¬1,000 to taxi golf clubs 240km for Sawgrass
The Holywood man wasn't happy with his new clubs and forked out almost a grand to get his old ones back.
Rory McIlroy was forced to fork out almost â¬1,000 last week as he got his old clubs delivered by Taxi from almost 240km away.
The Holywood native had been using a new set of clubs, namely, the TaylorMade Qi35 driver and fairway woods at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill last week, abandoning the older models which he used to win at Pebble Beach earlier this year.
Ahead of the final round at Bay Hill, McIlroy decided to go back to his previous set up and managed to get his clubs delivered by Uber prior to his tee-time on Sunday.
McIlroy reportedly forked out close to â¬1,000 to get his old sticks delivered, with over a third of that amount being left as a generous tip to the Uber driver who made the almost 500km round trip from McIlroy's home of Jupiter to Orlando Florida.
Speaking about his decision to revert back to the older model, McIlroy, who is firmly in the hunt at the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass this evening, said: âThere isnât a big difference.
"Although the new ones do give me a few extra yards.
âBut if it means hitting a seven iron into a green rather than an eight iron, Iâll deal with it. Iâll take that if the club feels more natural.
"Sometimes it can be love at first sight with new equipment. Or it takes a bit of time to adjust.â
After two excellent rounds at Sawgrass, McIlroy faced tough conditions on Saturday, shooting one-over Par leaving him four shots behind leader JJ Spaun.
"I think when youâre a little further back, youâd rather have some testy conditions," said Rory after his round.
"Iâm not out of it by any means. The wind is supposed to still be blowing, so it was nice to birdie [the 18th] to just get one closer to J.J.
"I was obviously keeping a close eye on what he was doing and trying to stay somewhat in touch with him. I saw that a few guys struggled on the way in.
"This golf course on the best of days can do that, but whenever the conditions are like this, thereâs some big numbers lurking out there."
On his current bag set-up, McIlroy confirmed that he would be keeping things as they are as he bids to finally win at Augusta National and take home The US Masters title for the first time.
