Roy Keane and Denis Irwin have opened up about their three decades long friendship.
On the latest episode of Stick to Football presented by Sky Bet, Keane and Irwin go into detail on how the pair have always been close friends since the early 1990's.
Keane and Irwin roomed together when Keane broke into the Ireland squad as a youngster at Nottingham Forest, and when he made the big-money move to Manchester United, Irwin helped him settle into the club.
On their early days together at United, Irwin said: "We were different ages when Roy Keane arrived at Manchester United. We went to South Africa for a pre-season tour – I wasn’t supposed to go but we signed Roy, and the manager made me go. We roomed together and that was it.
“That’s what you did in those days – you roomed together and had a bit of fun because there were no phones.”
On rooming with Irwin, Keane said: “I tolerated Denis Irwin. Obviously, we’d been together with Ireland, so it was great – I was going to a new club and had Denis there to help me settle in. I couldn’t have picked a better roommate.”
Irwin joined United from Oldham Athletic in 1990 and went on to make 368 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils over the next 12 years.
During that time, Irwin shared a dressing room with countless players. However, two men stand out when asked who his favourite ever teammate was.
“My favourite teammate – He’s [Roy Keane], from Cork, he looks after me. We had a great time together. I had twelve years there [at Manchester United] – I’d like to think I got on with everybody. I wasn’t one of them that upset anybody.
“Roy was brilliant, he really was. ‘Robbo’ [Bryan Robson] was brilliant and was great for the young lads.”
Later, Irwin continues to heap praise on Keane when he says that he is one of the best players that he ever played with at United, and while doing so, he managed to get a cheeky dig in at Gary Neville.
“[On the best player he played with] I would put it down to two – Mr Keane or Mr Robson. Very similar – I like those tough, aggressive players – they’d be at my side all day long and don’t get me wrong, I’ve got a fair choice.
“[Peter] Schmeichel was a great goalkeeper, ‘Scholesy’ was an unbelievable footballer, ‘Giggsy’ – the longevity of what he achieved. ‘Robbo’ was brilliant for four years – I know I caught the end of his career, but you could see why he was Mr. Manchester United in the 80s.
“I used to watch him box-to-box, but he was a typical box-to-box player back in the day. A bit like Roy and then ended up being a holding midfield player. A leader, captain, encouraging people, giving people a clip round the ear. Sorry Gary!”
A proud Corkman in his own right, Irwin states that the only problem he ever had with Keane was that he came from the wrong part of the city.
“[On what annoyed him most about Roy Keane] Nothing really. We come from the same city – he comes from the wrong side, I come from the right side!"
It should come as no surprise that the pair remain close to this day as Keane has spoken glowingly about Irwin as a player and a person on TV in his role as a Sky Sports pundit in recent years.
"My God, imagine if Denis Irwin was playing now," Keane said in 2019.
"He could play left-back, right-back, get you a goal, knew how to defend, never injured, a brilliant guy in the dressing room. Denis would be world-class to me – and he’s a Corkman!"
