Ruben Amorim gives injury update on Man Utd duo Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro
Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro were forced off in Man United's 2-1 Europa League win over Rangers at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
Ruben Amorim has admitted he substituted centre-backs Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro during Thursday night's win over Rangers as a precaution.
De Ligt was taken off at half-time and replaced by Harry Maguire before Yoro was forced off just 10 minutes into the second half. He was replaced by Tyrell Malacia and appeared to be limping as he made his way around the pitch and back to the dugout.
United were leading 1-0 at the point of Yoro's premature exit and looked as though they were going to be forced to settle for a point when Cyriel Dessers capitalised on a Maguire mistake to equalise two minutes from time. However, Bruno Fernandes scored a dramatic injury-time winner to seal all three points for Amorim's side.
Amorim clarified why he had been forced to substitute both De Ligt and Yoro. "He [De Ligt] felt something in his leg," Amorim told TNT Sports. "Also Leny and we cannot risk anything.
"I know that we have to win but we also have to protect the players and show that everyone matters, everyone is important too in this moment."
Ahead of last Sunday's 3-1 defeat to Brighton, Amorim admitted that he needed to continue rotating his pack to avoid unwanted injury issues. He made five changes for the visit of Rangers which included a return to the starting XI for Lisandro Martinez.
United are still relatively thin on the ground at centre-back amid the ongoing absences of Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans. The former was involved in Wednesday's open training session but was not deemed fit enough to be involved against the Scottish outfit.
