Russell Brand has been hit with rape and sexual assault charges - with London's Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service releasing statements
Russell Brand has been charged with rape and sexual assault following investigations by the Metropolitan Police. The 49-year-old TV and film star is believed to have been in the United States when the charges against him were announced and made public.
On Friday, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police confirmed Brand had been charged with a number of alleged crimes dating back to 1999. Brand himself has not responded publicly to the charges made against him.

On Friday, the Metropolitan Police announced that the star had been charged with the rape of a woman in the Bournemouth area in 1999 and the indecent assault of a woman in the Westminster area of London in 2001. They also explained the actor had been charged with orally raping and sexually assaulting a woman in 2004 in the Westminster area of London.
Further charges allege the star sexually assaulted a woman in the Westminster area of London between 2004 and 2005. Brand previously denied allegations made against him by Channel 4's Dispatches in 2023 which included allegations of sexual assault.

The charges allege that a woman was raped in 1999 in the Bournemouth area. Another charge alleged a woman was indecently assaulted in the Westminster area of London in 2001.

London's Metropolitan Police released a statement on Friday 4 April 2025, announcing that Brand had been charged with one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape and two counts of sexual assault. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, shared details about the case.
He said: "The women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers. The Met's investigation remains open and detectives ask anyone who has been affected by this case, or anyone who has any information, to come forward and speak with police."

He continued: "A dedicated team of investigators is available via email at CIT@met.police.uk. Support is also available by contacting the independent charity, Rape Crisis at 24/7 Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line."
The Crown Prosecution Service has also released a statement in relation to the charges made against Brand. Jaswant Narwal of the Crown Prosecution Service said: "We have today authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Russell Brand with a number of sexual offences.
"We carefully reviewed the evidence after a police investigation into allegations made following the broadcast of a Channel 4 documentary in September 2023. We have concluded that Russell Brand should be charged with offences including rape, sexual assault and indecent assault. These relate to reported non-recent offences between 1999 and 2005, involving four women."

She added: "The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that criminal proceedings are active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings."
Brand has not responded to the charges announced against him. The Mirror has contacted his office for comment.
The star is expected to to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 2 May - and he is believed to have been in the USA on the date the charges were announced. Social media content showed him appearing at a performance by American singer Brandon Lake on Thursday 3 April.
