Russia trolls Denmark on Ukraine troops pledge: 'who will guard Greenland?'
The Russian Foreign Ministry's spokeswoman said Ukrainian refugees in Denmark could guard Greenland should Danish troops be deployed as peacekeepers in Ukraine.

Russia has mocked Denmark's announcement that it would be prepared to send peacekeeping troops to Ukraine if necessary.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova responded after Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen announced that Denmark is "in principle" ready to participate in a peacekeeping mission in the event of a ceasefire in Ukraine.

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman was alluding to President Donald Trump's quest to take over Greenland—a semiautonomous island that is part of Denmark. In his joint address to Congress on March 4, he repeated these ambitions, saying that that he would gain control of Greenland "one way or another."
Trump has refused to rule out using military force to seize control of the Arctic island, which is home to a large U.S. Space Force base and is rich in natural resources. He has said the U.S. needs the territory for "national security and even international security."
Greenland's prime minister has repeatedly told Trump that his country isn't for sale.
Zakharova's remarks came after Rasmussen said it is "important that Europe sends the right signals to both Putin and Washington."
"By stating our willingness to contribute, we emphasize that if a European presence becomes necessary for a ceasefire or peace agreement, Denmark is, in principle, ready," he added.
Denmark's Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen later clarified that no plans were in place yet.
"We have not made a decision on any specific deployment. It depends on how the situation develops. This is a statement of preparedness, not an immediate action," Poulsen said.
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starker said in an article for newspaper The Telegraph published February 16 that the U.K. would be "ready and willing" to deploy British troops in Ukraine as part of a potential peace deal.
Europe is "facing a once-in-a-generation moment for the collective security of our continent," Starmer said, emphasizing the broader stakes of the conflict started by Russia nearly three years ago.
"This is not only a question about the future of Ukraine—it is existential for Europe as a whole," he said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said sending European troops to Ukraine "can't be allowed" because it would be tantamount to the "direct, official and unveiled involvement of NATO members in the war against Russia."
Washington has said that the U.S. will not deploy troops to Ukraine.

"If these troops are deployed as peacekeepers to Ukraine at any point, they should be deployed as part of a non-NATO mission. And they should not be covered under Article 5. There also must be robust international oversight of the line of contact.
"To be clear, as part of any security guarantee, there will not be U.S. troops deployed to Ukraine."
What Happens NextConcerns over Europe's collective security are expected to intensify as Kyiv, Moscow and Washington engage in negotiations aimed at potentially ending the war. Representatives from Ukraine and the U.S. are meeting in Saudi Arabia for talks on Tuesday.
