Sarah Jessica Parker Almost Wasn't Cast as Carrie Bradshaw—Find Out Which 'Sex and the City' Castmate Was
Kristin Davis revealed that she was asked to audition for the role of Carrie Bradshaw in 'Sex and the City'—but instead, she asked to audition for Charlotte.
Sex and the City may have a few flaws, but casting is not one of them. It's hard to imagine anyone other than Sarah Jessica Parker playing Carrie Bradshaw. It's equally hard to envisage any other actor but Kristin Davis as Charlotte York. But as it turns out, the iconic show almost looked very, very different. Prepare to be mind-blown—apparently, there is a world in which Kristin Davis could have been our Carrie.
The very idea is unthinkable! But it's true. On the first episode of her podcast, Are You a Charlotte, Davis explained how she was initially asked to audition for Carrie.

“I got this script from Darren [Star, the series creator] and it had a little note from him, and it said, ‘Kristin, I really want you to read this for the part of Carrie,’” she said, clarifying that she wasn't offered the part, just the audition.
“And Carrie is very clearly the main part and she’s described as having the body of Heather Locklear with the mind of Dorothy Parker. And I'm like, ‘What?! I can’t do that!’ So I was stressing,” she went on. “I thought to myself, ‘I can’t possibly pull this off!’”
Instead, Davis found herself drawn to Charlotte.

“I liked this other girl, Charlotte," she said. "Because Charlotte in the pilot, there was not a lot on the page, but it was very clear that she had a different point of view than the other girls, that she was more focused on relationships and love, which I kind of related to...It just felt like she was more hopeful...She seemed more younger in her viewpoint and open than the other characters, which at the time I related to a lot."
Davis told Star that Charlotte was the one for her.

“I was like, ‘Darren, Darren, I can’t possibly play that part.’ I think I called him and said, ‘I can’t play Carrie, I don’t even know what you’re thinking, but I could play this other girl; I want to play this other girl.’”
And thank goodness she did. After all, who could have captured Carrie's New York City It-girl energy like Parker? And who could have portrayed Charlotte's endearing naivety and sunny romantic optimism quite like Davis? Clearly, the right thing happened—Parker and Davis are still utterly iconic in their roles in And Just Like That—and apparently it's all thanks to Davis's good instincts. After all, she's a total Charlotte!
